Alcohol-based markers (sometimes called “permanent markers”) are typically the preferred choice of artists because they blend more smoothly and predictably (see below), and you can create shades, tints and ombrés by overlaying colors.

I find that felt tip pens like whiteboard markers, Sharpies, Microns and highlighters are best stored with the tip down. It keeps the ink in contact with the fiber/felt tip so that it does not dry out. Rollerballs and ballpoints are best if they are stored upright so they don't leak or get gummy at the point.

Alcohol evaporates at a lower temperature than water. And because of this, if you use your sharpie often or do not cap it back after using, the alcohol at the tip of sharpie will evaporate quickly leading to the sharpie drying out.

Vinegar/lemon juice: Acids, like vinegar and lemon juice, can be effective against permanent marker stains. Though they are mildly acidic in nature, they can still dissolve mineral deposits, dirt, grease, and grime. White vinegar is also antibacterial and works best on synthetic fibers.

All you need to do is pour a little rubbing alcohol into a cap, soak the marker until you see ink swirling out, and then put the marker's cap back on for 15 minutes while it dries. Once the time is up, you should have a marker working like it's brand new.

It has an abrasive quality to remove the marker dye without dissolving it or damaging the interior. Baking soda kinds of toothpaste work better than others. If you have a gel-based toothpaste, mix a little baking soda with it before scrubbing the permanent marker stain.
