It sounds like fodder for new lyrics for the 1985 Dire Straits hit, “Money for Nothing.”
The average ticket price for a classic-rock concert is $119.14. That’s the highest of any genre from the last five years, according to a study by FinanceBuzz, a personal-finance website. For the study, FinanceBuzz analyzed 2017 to 2021 data collected by touring-industry resource Pollstar.
Other notable findings: Pop was the second-most expensive at $100.65 per ticket. The cheapest average concert tickets were for Christian music at $39.38, followed by EDM (electronic dance music) at $55.05 and alternative rock at $63.54. The average cost for a country concert ticket? $66.18, which was lower than folk ($75.21), R&B and hip-hop (both $82.76).

Average ticket cost for “rock” was $85.94. The highest average cost among “rock” artists belonged to Metallica ($230, in 2021). “Classic rock” act Bruce Springsteen’s “Springsteen on Broadway” tickets from 2017 ($496.16), 2018 ($508.93) and 2019 ($506.39) were the top three most expensive average ticket costs the study found. At $337.43, Lady Gaga’s 2020 tour was the priciest ticket on average among pop acts.
Overall, from 2017 to 2021, pop generated more than $5.2 billion in ticket sales across 137 tours, according to the study. That’s the highest total of any genre. Classic rock was second, at $3.5 billion across 100 tours, the study says. More at financebuzz.com/price-of-concert-tickets-by-genre.
