Whiskey: The Healthiest Spirit on Earth? - Oak & Eden (5)

Whiskey is no stranger to the health conscious, but what is it exactly that gives it this healthy reputation? With its high concentration of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties, whiskey can help fight off illness, diabetes, cancer - even prevent Alzheimer's! Of course this all depends on how often you drink (which should be without excess), but if you're looking for a healthier way to relax after a long day - you can enjoy that glass while not sacrificing your diet!

The first thing to make clear is that whiskey, unlike all other alcohols (in particular wine and beer), has no carbohydrate content. But this isn’t necessarily what stimulates any necessary health benefit. What makes whiskey a go-to for those who are health conscious is the antioxidant properties of the drink (which prevent cellular damage), the presence of anti-inflammatory chemicals (which can reduce pain and swelling), and the concentrations of chemical compounds (which can help reduce cholesterol levels). It is also gluten free and is known to increase insulin resistance, as well as increased metabolism. Studies have also shown that those who drink whiskey are less likely to suffer from type II diabetes or become obese than those who drink other types of alcohol.

Whiskey has been used in medicine for centuries, dating back to the 16th century when British doctors prescribed it as treatment for everything from epilepsy to gout. Nowadays this prized spirit is lauded for its ability to protect the body from disease, including Alzheimer's! One study in particular found that whiskey can actually help prevent memory loss and mental decline by promoting the creation of healthy neurons throughout the brain.

Keep in mind, however, that too much of a good thing can be bad for you - and whiskey consumption should always be kept to a minimum. It does all depend on how often you drink (and in what quantities), but when consumed within moderation, whiskey can truly add years to your life and put you on the path to better health.

So whether in celebration or simply enjoying an evening in, pour yourself a glass and toast to good health!
