Sephora was launched in 1970 in Limoges, France. It was acquired by Dominique Mandonnaud in 1993 who merged the purchase with his perfume chain under the Sephora brand. Mandonnaud is credited with designing and executing Sephora's "assisted self-service" sales experience.
