The Walking Dead series had much to live up to in casting for the iconic comic book characters. Many of these characters had distinct costumes or features that fans were anxious to see come alive on screen.Examples of these characters are Ezekiel (Khary Payton), Princess (PaoloLázaro),and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), to only name a few. One character perfectly cast was Beta, Alpha’s (Samantha Morton) right-hand man.
In the comic book, Beta always wears a mask of skin, which is the trademark of the Whisperers, that only hides the top portion of his face.When Ryan Hurst was cast in this role, fans went wild at the thought of the imposing Hurst playing Beta, who is seven feet tall in the comics. Hurst stands at 6′ 6″.

Beta was a formidable figure as the second in command of the Whisperers. You didn’t want to cross him as you never knew how he would react. He is a brutal sociopathic man devoted to the Whisperer’s way of life.
We also find out that Beta in the series is a celebrity like his comic book counterpart, a famous basketball player turned actor. In the series, he is the singer Half Moon, who Alpha and Negan recognize. Half Moon is the only character to appear in all three of The Walking Dead universe series. In The Walking Dead, as the main antagonist, in Fear the Walking Dead on one of Daniel’s album covers, and in World Beyond on one of Dennis’ album covers.
Ryan Hurst – The Walking Dead
Hurst is well-known for his role as Opie Winston on the FX series Sons of Anarchy. Although Hurst has been an actor most of his life, this role propelled him to the spotlight. His portal of Opie earned him the2011 Satellite Award for Best Supporting Actor – Series, Miniseries, or Television Film.
He is also known for his roles inRemember the Titans, Taken, We Were Soldiers, Saving Private Ryan, and The Ladykillers. His other TV roles have been inBates Motel, Outsiders, Bosch, Paradise City, S.W.A.T., and The Mysterious Benedict Society.
Hurst also voiced Thor in the new video gameGod of War: Ragnarök and portrays Milligan in The Mysterious Benedict Society. Next, he will star in the movie Desperation Road, a Southern noir thriller that also stars Mel Gibson.
An interesting bit of trivia, his father is Rick Hurst, who portrayed Cletus in The Dukes of Hazzard series.

Who was Beta in The Walking Dead? In the show, Beta's a country singer (he was known as Half Moon), whereas in the comics he's a former athlete and actor. Although the series gave him more background, it wasn't as critical considering he didn't want anyone to recognize him.
Beta's voice was recognized by one of the Whisperers.
After killing Gamma, part of Beta's face was exposed. A nearby Whisperer sees Beta's face and recognizes him. "It's you," says the Whisperer. "Your voice sounded familiar, but..."
Negan is referring to the fact that Beta is actually a famous country singer in the world of The Walking Dead. But Daryl, despite likely being a country fan, is nonplussed by Beta's identity and replies “nobody.”
One thing that Beta is fiercely protective over is his face and appearance. He wears his 'skin mask' on his face at all times, even outside of the presence of walkers.
On Sunday's “Stalker' episode of The Walking Dead, Beta entered inside the walls of Alexandria thanks to a secret trap-door that Dante built into the grave of a patient he killed. That allowed Beta to murder several Alexandrians and then capture Gamma, who had defected to the other side.
After spotting Lydia leading the horde away, Beta is confronted by Negan. Beta charges at him and throws a walker on him, then prepares to kill him in revenge for murdering Alpha.

Taking the former leader of the Saviors down, Beta prepares to kill him in revenge for the death of Alpha, but is attacked by Daryl who stabs Beta through both eyes. Beta flashes back on his life as a Whisperer before he is devoured by the horde, a fate he gladly accepts.
He is a former member of the Whisperers, but is later abandoned by his mother. He is then rescued by the Hilltop Colony and is adopted by Earl and Tammy Rose Sutton.
In combat, Beta was always one of the strongest Walking Dead characters. He could shred multiple opponents at a time with a unique combination of incredible strength and combat techniques.
In the morning, the deranged Beta "thanks" Alpha before putting her down with a knife to the head. He then removes part of her face and uses it to repair his damaged walker mask. In the episode "A Certain Doom", Lydia, using Alpha's walker mask, leads Alpha's horde to its destruction with the help of Carol.
