Wearing a black tie is a universal show of respect and a colour which traditionally signifies mourning across Europe.
Some newsreaders also wore black armbands as a sign of respect.
Newsreaders around the world, for example in Australia, wore black following the announcement of the Queen's death.
Presenters for the BBC have a set of black clothes ready and waiting in case they suddenly have to announce a high-profile death.
How long will newsreaders wear black for?
Newsreaders continued to wear black for the full period of mourning, which was observed in the UK for ten days after the Queen's death, up to and including the day of her funeral.
The Queen died at Balmoral Castle in Scotland, and her coffin was accompanied by her daughter, Princess Anne, in a cortege to Edinburgh.
Operation Unicorn was enacted as the Queen died in Scotland, so the Queen's coffin was taken to Palace of Holyroodhouse, in Edinburgh, where thousands of Scots went to pay their respects.
