Although the dubbed version of “The Promised Neverland” season two is still airing, the original subbed anime has been finished with putting out new episodes since March.
While most audience members would wonder whether their favorite shows have been renewed for another season, the fact that many fans of the original manga have actually called for the anime to be cancelled most definitely begs the question: Will there be a season three of “The Promised Neverland?”
Before we get into the status of “The Promised Neverland’s” future, let’s first tackle what went wrong: According to CBR, while any adaptations of an original work—from books to plays to manga—tend to take certain liberties, the new direction in which season two of the anime took fell very flat with fans.
For one thing, the anime completely skipped over key plot points that served to further develop main characters and the story as a whole (cough, the Royal family, cough). We won’t get into too much detail if you yourself happen to still be watching the show, but just trust us on this one.
If you’re thinking, “Everyone’s a critic, of course there’s going to be a few fans that are unsatisfied with the anime,” this is true. However, search for “The Promised Neverland” on Reddit and take a look at how many threads are dedicated to discussing how badly the show flopped. Even the people who claim that season two wasn’t so bad express being very confused at the ending, as well as why the show-runners made the changes they did.
So, to get back to this article’s original point, the chances of “The Promised Neverland” getting a season three are slim to none. In fact, the season two finale covered the manga’s final portion, so the answer may actually be a confident “no.”
However, that doesn’t mean that an OVA isn’t in the future. Plus, “The Promised Neverland” could always go the same direction as “Fullmetal Alchemist,” getting its own “Brotherhood” that could finally do the story justice.
