by Daniel Workman

World’s Top Export Countries 2021 (1)

Globally, total export products were worth an estimated US$21.513 trillion in 2021. That dollar amount reflects an 22.5% increase over the 5-year period starting in 2017 and a 22.9% uptick from $17.499 trillion one year earlier during 2020.

As assessed by total value, the top 10 export countries are China, United States of America, Germany, Japan, Netherlands, Hong Kong, South Korea, Italy, France and Belgium. Combined, those leading exports-based economies represent about half (50.7%) of global exports by value from all countries.

Based on statistics from the International Monetary Fund, the total Gross Domestic Product (GDP) on a Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) basis for all countries totaled $146.043 trillion in 2021. That global economic benchmark rose 10.2% from $132.487 trillion one year earlier in 2020.

Based on the above metrics, exported goods account for 14.7% of overall worldwide economic output during 2021 in terms of GDP in Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) terms. That percentage compares to 13.2% one year earlier, suggesting the relatively expanding importance of exported goods in terms of global economic performance.

As of July 2021, the earth’s population was roughly 7.9 billion. Applying that metric, the $21.513 trillion in total exports translates to approximately $2,700 for every person on the planet in 2021.

Below are the world’s top export countries that shipped the highest dollar value in exports during 2021. Also shown is the change in the total value of exported products for each country from 2020 to 2021.
