Lululemon has released its highly anticipated yoga accessory collection made from mushroom leather, as part of the brand's ongoing commitment to sustainability.
Developed by Lululemon’s Accessories Design team, the 100% vegan collection features two bags: the 2- in-1 Meditation and Yoga Mat Bag and Barrel Duffel Bag, available to purchase online at lululemon.com from Tuesday and retailing for $238 and $328, respectively. The bags are also on display at select Lululemon stores in Tokyo, Melbourne, Sydney, Beijing, Shanghai, and Hong Kong.
“The launch of our Mylo bags is an exciting milestone for Lululemon, as our guests can now experience the premium look and feel of this innovative, sustainable material firsthand,” said Sun Choe, chief product officer at Lululemon. “Our Lululemon Meditation and Yoga Mat bag and Lululemon Barrel Duffle bag, which feature Mylo, demonstrate our commitment to creating a healthier future through low-impact products, paired with the performance-driven and high-quality design we’re known for.”
The products feature Mylo, a vegan, sustainable material made from mycelium, the root structure of fungi, a process developed by California-based Bolt Threads. The fabric feels and functions just like animal leather - but is instead grown from mushrooms, and can take on any color, finish or emboss.
Intentionally designed to be low impact, Mylo takes less than two weeks to grow, emits fewer greenhouse gases, and uses less water and resources than animal leather. It is known as one of the future fabrics of the fashion industry, as innovative designers increasingly look towards sustainable alternatives to materials like leather and plastic
Lululemon first announced plans to create mushroom leather yoga accessories last summer, as part of its dedication to sustainability and the use of innovative materials. The Canadian athletic apparel retailer is also a founding member of the Mylo consortium, which brings together forward-thinking fashion companies including adidas, Kering, lululemon, and Stella McCartney, to invest in sustainable, ground-breaking materials.
