About Celine

Celine was originally found in 1945 by Céline Vipiana and her husband. The original concept was a made-to-measure children’s shoe boutique. The brand has come a long way since then. In these days the Celine logo was a distinct red elephant logo. The brand soon expanded to ready-to-wear apparel for the everyday woman which included wool suits, leather vests, fitted professional shirts, and pastel denim.

In the 60s, Celine launched a shoe line and ventured into the luxury perfume industry. Soon after, leather accessories were added to the selection including belts, bags, and gloves. Since those days, Celine has gone international opening boutiques in cities like Beverly Hills and Hong Kong.

The Celine Luggage Tote

The Luggage tote was introduced in spring 2010, Phoebe Philo’s debut collection at Celine. While it was readily available at first, it soon became the iconic must-have.

Over the years the bag has been introduced in many sizes and versions, some of which are longer available.

How to Authenticate you Celine Luggage Tote

There are a few things to look out for when authenticating your Celine Luggage Tote. Follow these few tips to make sure that your new Celine Luggage Tote is 100% authentic:

1. Heat Stamping

The exterior Céline logo should have an accent aigu, or right-pointing accent, above the first “e,” and “Paris” printed beneath. From Fall 2018 onwards, the accent is no longer on the bags. The font should not look thick and blurry, nor thin and faint.

Below, the left bag is fake, and the bag on the right is real. The font on the fake bag is taller – notice the ‘C’ is an oval shape, whereas the ‘C’ on the real bag is circular.

The interior label will have “Made In Italy” printed in caps to the right. Note that on different size totes, the labels will differ. On Nano Luggage Totes, the logo is embossed on a leather tab.

The color of the heat stamp always matches the hardware color – some materials are just embossed.

The all python luggage (was only available in the Nano size) does not have a heat stamp on the outside between the handles.

2. Serial Number

The serial number on luggage totes is found on a leather tab in the rear interior pocket.

Céline has many variations on how the serial code is presented. There are differences in the thickness of the embossing, the shape of the leather tab itself, and the font and the format, and this makes it a minefield for authenticators.

One thing that remains constant is the format in which the serial number is presented. It is as follows: one letter, followed by two letters, followed by four numbers. These sections will all be separated by a dash.

The letters indicate the location of the factory where the bag was made. The first and third numbers indicate the week it was made, and the second and fourth digits are the year. So, for example, ‘S – PA – 0122’ means that the bag was made in the second week of 2012.

However, some bags have a single line, while others have two lines of serial numbers. Others also have the words ‘Made in Italy’, and this can be seen under a single line of serial numbers, or two lines.

Many Celine authentication guides state that the leather tab should not be curved. This is not true. You will find curved edges and straight edges on real tabs.

3. Zipper

Unlike many other fashion houses, Céline does not use brand name zippers in their bags. The backs should be plain and unmarked. However, the size of the zipper is often listed on the end, i.e. the number eight. On Luggage Totes, the zippers should have an antiqued finish and should never be brassy or shiny. The D-Rings on the zippers should be large enough to leave space on either side of the leather pull.

4. Lining

Céline always uses high-quality, sturdy leather on their handbags, which lends to their hefty weight. Smooth calfskin Luggage Totes will have matching leather linings. Drummed or pebbled leather bags will be lined in micro-suede.

5. Shoulder Strap

The hardware is often a tell-tale sign of a fake, as many counterfeiters get it wrong. Authentic Celine hardware comes in silver and gold-tone, and has a subtle antiquated and tarnished finish to it, whereas the hardware on most fakes is very shiny.

There are many things to look for on the hardware. Below are two examples. The hardware on the right is real, and the one on the left is fake – here’s why: authentic clasps have a curved ring attached at the base, whereas the ring on the fake hardware has a straight edge.

Secondly, the base of the clasp on the left is completely different from the one on the right. The fake model has four distinct rings, separated by gaps. The real one has three rings, and there are no gaps between them.

Below are photos of the same clasps as above. Notice that the thumb pieces are distinctly different. The fake one is more curved, and there’s a larger gap between it and the clasp itself, whereas there’s a smaller gap between the parts of the real clasp.

Finally, observe the ‘Céline’ engraving. On the real one, the word begins at the top of the clasp. On the fake one, the word is read from the base upwards. Counterfeiters regularly get this wrong.
