Are mens speedos coming back?
These skimpy swimming trunks have left many people divided for decades but the comeback is on! Just like most other types of fashions, Speedos have been up and down, which is very similar to the appearance of a man running along the beach in a pair of the famous swimming attire.
In many ways, Speedos can be more comfortable. Besides not dragging you down when wet, they also don't bunch up or rub between your thighs when walking. They can also be more practical - a Speedo will dry considerably faster than most trunks.
The global fashion search engine Stylight reports a 508% boom in clicks for Speedo-type models in April 2022, compared to the same period a year earlier — enough to make this skimpy swimwear the star of the summer.
The regulations went into effect Jan. 1, 2010. Since their introduction in 2008 the suits, which cut down on fatigue and give swimmers more buoyancy and speed, have led to nearly 200 world records. Last year, 43 world records were set at last summer's world championships in Rome.
They're Comfortable
Like any item of menswear, the fit is essential for comfort. As long as you get the proper cut for your body, we think you'll find that swim briefs are more efficient and enjoyable to swim in than traditional trunks.
Make sure the speedo is not too tight or constricting. It should feel snug but the fabric should not dig into your skin. Walk around, squat, and sit in the speedo to ensure it is comfortable. If it feels comfortable on you, you will likely be more confident wearing it around.
Speed: One of the most significant differences of Speedo briefs vs. jammers, boardshorts, and square leg shorts is speed. Speedo briefs have less fabric than knee-length swim shorts, which may help you swim faster.
In French public pools, from the racing lanes of Paris to the open-air lidos and water parks of the south, anything bigger than Speedos is banned and you must hoist yourself into a posing pouch as a civic requirement.
“They have to be small because everything has to stay in place,” Tom explained. “If you're spinning around the last thing you want to do is have something come out of place! And when you hit the water you don't want things flapping about because it would hurt.”
Swim briefs are also referred to as competition briefs, swimming trunks, bathers, togs, racer bathers, posing briefs, racing briefs, and colloquially in Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom as "budgie smugglers".
Why is Speedo Fastskin banned?
As the world records continued to tumble, FINA –the sport's governing body – changed the legislation around the body-length swimsuits and certain fabrics, effectively banning Speedo's latest suit for being too fast.
In general, it's totally OK and even the norm to wear swim trunks as shorts, primarily because so many styles look like they came out of your regular shorts drawer anyway and no one will even notice. But there are a couple of rules to follow to make sure you're not taking this trend too far.
Olympic male divers wear tight and small speedos to keep everything in place when diving. Speedos offer great freedom of movement in the legs, which aids manoeuvrability and a tight fit offers comfort and security to ensure the briefs stay in place after a high impact dive.
