Nobody said this was a love story between a nice boy and girl. But they are well suited. In the end, Serena saw Dan as someone she could respect because he gained control of a world she never could, and he made her into a god. They make perfect sense in a dark, twisted sort of way.

Why is Lily not in season 3 of Gossip Girl?
Eventually, the actress was put on bed rest in her third trimester and was written out of the final 4 episodes of the season. Rutherford was pregnant while filming season 2 of Gossip Girl, but her character Lily van der Woodsen - the mom of Serena van der Woodsen (AKA Blake Lively) - was not.

Scott Rosson is the secret love child of Lily van der Woodsen and Rufus Humphrey whom Lily gave away when she was very young. Lily kept the secret from Rufus for many years until CeCe tells him in season two. He is also the half brother of Serena and Eric van der Woodsen and Dan and Jenny Humphrey.
Scott Rosson is the biological son of Rufus Humphrey and Lily van der Woodsen. He was born at a French hospital sometime in 1986, whom Lily secretly gave up without Rufus's knowledge.
There was a whole Season 3 plot where Scott pretended to go to NYU and wormed his way into the Humphrey family's good graces, only to reveal that he was Lily and Rufus' son on their wedding day.
