Among the original group of Atlanta survivors, only Carol (Melissa McBride) and Daryl (Norman Reedus) are still on the show.
The results were shocking. 7.166 billion / 5000 = 1433200 (one million four hundred thirty-three thousand two hundred) humans left on the ENTIRE PLANET. Moral of the story? If you're alone, don't kill someone, because they may be the last human you will ever see.
Interestingly, some of them are among the few original cast members who are still alive. Overall, only five characters who appeared in the first season of the show are still alive, and one just barely made it there.
The Walking Dead – Rick Grimes leaves
Now, Lincoln had a very good and personal reason for leaving, but Rick, his story is much different. In the season 9 episode “What Comes After,” Rick, being the hero that he is, sacrifices himself by blowing up a bridge filled with walkers to save those he loves.

On Talking Dead, it was revealed that Hershel was initially scripted to be killed by Randall in the episode "Better Angels" during Randall's escape. However, the producers decided to allow the character to live so that they could explore the dramatic potential of losing his farm in "Beside the Dying Fire" and Season 3.
He had to die for several things to happen, including Maggie's character journey of leaving the group and the eventual conflict with Negan. Glenn also had to die to make Negan as dangerous as he became.

Armed with a katana and harboring a mysterious past, Michonne is introduced clothed under a hood and pulling the shackles of two reanimated corpses for protection and camouflage. The two walkers are subsequently revealed to be her zombified boyfriend and his best friend.
And Philly was also revealed to be the home base of the CRM in The Walking Dead: World Beyond. So the Rick part of the Walking Dead series finale puzzle clearly points to Philadelphia being the setting for some if not most of the upcoming Rick and Michonne spinoff series.
Those TWD season 12 dreams slipped further away. Rick did, in fact, return to The Walking Dead at the very end of the series finale, something that fans didn't expect.

Just before Rick leaves the CDC, Jenner whispers something in his ear: Everyone is infected. Whether you're bitten or scratched by a walker or not, you will become a zombie once you die. Rick doesn't reveal the news to the rest of the group until the Season 2 finale.

Carl did put down Lori after she died, in order to prevent her from becoming a “walker”. It was only later when Rick returned to the spot in the prison where she had died, when he found that her body was gone, and apparently entirely consumed by the “fat walker”.
Not only does he survive The Walking Dead, he outlasts the show's main character Rick Grimes (after actor Andrew Lincoln departed the show in season 9) to become one of its two central protagonists.
He was actually one of Negan's Saviors and a war prisoner. He butted heads on Maggie, who was leading the Hilltop at the time, on more than one occasion. They ultimately become allies. You may have even caught a vibe between them.

Maggie and the Hilltop had the body of Hank boxed up in a coffin and delivered to Negan with a message on top that they have 37 more bodies. Simon opens up the coffin to see that there's a walker inside and Negan puts a couple screws through the brain to end it.
