How many Overwatch heroes are there?
There are 34 playable heroes in Overwatch. Each hero offers a unique style of play, and is classified under one of three roles: Tank, Damage, or Support. Each team can only have 2 of each hero, although some Arcade game modes allow multiple.
Overwatch currently has 32 characters.
Ahead of the Overwatch 2 release date, players jumping into a game of the original Overwatch can look forward to battling it out as one of 32 playable heroes.

Initial development of the game began with creating the first Hero character, Tracer, who was based on a character from Titan with similar time-manipulation abilities.

Blizzard changing the hero's name from Jesse McCree to Cole Cassidy is due to the ongoing harassment suit brought against Activision Blizzard by the State of California.
In Overwatch lore, D.Va is Hana Song, a 19-year old former professional gamer going by her gamertag "D.Va".
The change happened due to a shift at Blizzard following reports of sexual harassment and toxicity in leadership. The new moniker is meant to distance the gunslinger from now-fired Blizzard game designer Jesse McCree, the character's namesake, who was terminated after the outcry over a toxic culture.
The fact that Overwatch 2 will be free-to-play means this should be an easy enough transition, since no players need to pay for the new game.
Can you still buy overwatch 1?
You can no longer purchase Overwatch 1 on its own either—Overwatch 2's "Watchpoint Pack (opens in new tab)" with premium skins and in-game currency is now the only way to acquire the original game if you haven't already.
With the addition of Echo, the promise of "at least" 1 new hero has been fulfilled. It was later confirmed in an interview that Echo would be the final hero before the release of Overwatch 2.
