How tight should dress pants be?
You want to be able to pinch around 1/2″ to 1 inch of fabric on either side of your thigh. If it's less than that, your pants are too tight.
The Seat. The seat of your pants should hug your posterior slightly - not squeeze it. You want to avoid making your dress pants fit like cling wrap around your butt. When you're shopping for dress pants, squat for 5 to 10 seconds to make sure you have more than enough room to maneuver without struggling.
Suit pants that are too tight in the seat aren't necessarily a lost cause. An experienced tailor may be able to let the seat out, but this depends on the pants having enough fabric in the seams to allow this. If you need to stretch out your pants a lot, stretch them out using water. If you only need to loosen them a little, expand your pants while you wear them by doing some simple movements like squats and putting objects in the waistband.
