With this being said, there are many fashion designers who do not sew at all. They outsource their clothing creation to professional seamstresses, sample makers and factories. It is highly possible as well that you do not need to know how to create your own clothing pattern either.
Even at a school like Fashion Institute of Technology, which strictly caters to the fashion industry, majors such as business do not require a portfolio. This means you must first submit an application to the school itself and then declare yourself as a prospective fashion major by submitting the required portfolio.
It's sewing, design, business and everything inbetween
Most fashion schools will go above teaching you how to use a needle and thread. Sure, you'll become proficient in the necessities – design, patternmaking, sewing and twilling – but you can expect to earn a skill set that reaches far beyond just drawing or sewing.
Contrary to popular belief however, it is perfectly possible to begin building a successful fashion career at home. It's simply a case of using your own time to build the skills, knowledge and confidence to go pro.

You do not have to know how to draw to be a fashion designer or create your fashion designs. In fact, it is required within the industry that you are able to create digital designs at some point in the design process.
