How well does fabric tape work?
Fabric tape or hemming tape is a good and useful product that allows their user to melt seams (with an iron), hem seams, or different bond fabrics by sticking them together without using a needle and thread. It also assists sewers in keeping their project and fabrics in place while sewing.
It's non woven fusible tape which has adhesive material on both sides and glues two layers of fabric together. It looks like a web, really, and sometimes it's called FUSIBLE WEB. It melts from hot iron. Iron-on hem tape is intended to be permanent and can't be removed from fabric.
The best that sticks to fabric is fabric tape, which comes in double-sided or single-sided, wide or narrow, clear or matte colors. Many other varieties such as duct tape, gaffer, and Gorilla tape will stick to fabric but will not come out easily.
Hemming tape can take some practice, but once you have mastered this delicate tape, it is a very useful addition to your sewing basket. It travels well too and could be just the right thing for any little repair job while you are away from your trusty sewing machine.
This instant fabric tape adheres a variety of fabrics without heat setting for a permanent bond that remains flexible, even after washing (yes, you can wash it!)
While using fusible hem tape is a quick alternative to sewing a hem in place, it is permanent and cannot be removed. If you are hemming a garment that may need to be adjusted at some point, for example hemming pants, this may not be the best solution as there is no way to remove the adhesive once it has been fused.
Fabric glue is an adhesive alternative to sewing that laminates fabrics together by creating a temporary or permanent bond. It's a great option if you don't like sewing or if you need to fix something quickly.
Most permanent brands of fabric glues once properly applied and allows to cure completely can last around 5-6 washings before it starts to fall apart. Now if you don't wash the fabric and don't put too much strain on it the glue can potentially last for an indefinite period of time.
There are two great ways to attach fabric without sewing: fabric glue or a fusible bonding tape like Dritz Stitch Witchery. If you have a sewing machine, sewing is often still the fastest and most reliable method for many projects, but fabric glue or Stitch Witchery are great alternatives.
