How wide should a cowl be?
Most cowls have a circumference similar to that of a hat (22 to 23 inches), but you can make yours longer if you wish. You can wrap a longer cowl around your neck more than once, but a shorter cowl slips over your head one time to fit snugly against your neck.
If you're knitting a cowl, a circular needle with a length of 24″ is ideal. The needle size will depend on your yarn weight. Keep in mind that a thin yarn will take longer to knit and a thicker yarn will be quicker to knit.
Using any stitch you'd like (single crochet being the most basic), crochet for as long as you want your cowl. A nice basic length would be between 50″ – 65″. You are crocheting as if you're making a basic scarf.

I know what you're thinking: is there really a difference between an infinity scarf and a cowl? Short answer: yes. While infinity scarves can often seem to go on forever (as their name suggests), cowls are more fitted. Most cowls are also often wide enough to wear as a hood.
On average, scarves measure 5-8 inches wide, with a length of 40-70″. This is very much an average, so don't take it as gospel truth.
Cast on enough stitches for your desired snood width; 26cm is enough to wrap pleasingly. Having decided whether you want a single-loop or a double, keep knitting until the piece is long enough to wrap loosely around your neck once, around 80cm, or twice, around 140cm.

What width should a crochet scarf be?
On average, scarves are usually 6 to 8 inches wide, and anywhere from 3 to 10 feet long. This is a wide range, and more exact measurements are based on the style of the scarf, and on the size of the person.
Measure your fabric in a rectangle shape to the length and width you want; we chose 60″ long x 40″ wide, as a 60″ infinity scarf can usually be wrapped twice around the neck for a nice, close fit. Because we're making a double-layered scarf, the width needs to be cut twice as wide as the scarf's final dimension.
To find out how many stitches to cast on, multiply the stitches per inch by the desired width of the cowl. For example, if your gauge is 2 stitches per inch and you would like your cowl to be 23 inches wide, then multiply 2 by 23 to get a total of 46 stitches to cast on.

Snood – From what I understand, A snood is a lot like a cowl, except it has a bonus feature: a hood! Snoods are great for super cold weather and can be worn under a jacket with the hood out for extra warmth.

When it comes to the width of your knitted scarf, it's a matter of preference. The average width of a knitted scarf can range from 4.5” (11 cm) wide to 8” (20 cm) wide. Any wider and you cross over into Lenny Kravitz land. For this easy scarf knitting pattern, I'll stay within the 5-6 inch range.
A traditional scarf goes tip to tip. If you hold out your arms the scarf should reach from your left finger tip across to your right. This averages about 60”. A men's scarf is typically about 6” wide, whereas, a women's scarf width has more flexibility.
How many rows should a scarf be?
To measure, place the knitting on a flat surface, place the measuring tape under the needle, and measure down to the cast-on edge. Work the 6 rows of the pattern stitch. These are the rows that form the ridges at each end of the scarf. Repeat rows 9 and 10 until the knitting measures 6 inches from the cast-on edge.
In terms of circumference, it can often be tricky to get the perfect length that neither strangles you nor sags down exposing your neck to the bitter chill. We have found the ideal length to be around the 60-65cm / 25" mark.
