Is it safe to swim in the Thames in Richmond?
It is not recommended to swim in the tidal section of the Thames (east of Putney Bridge to the North Sea). It is neither safe nor particularly nice. But as you head west the river gets cleaner, safer (less boat traffic) and more beautiful. All these 10 wild swimming locations are west of London and easily accessible.
Never swim across the river. Don't swim more than 10 metres from the water's edge and as far inshore as possible. Try to remain in water shallow enough to stand up in so you are able to stand up and return to a place of safety should you get into difficulty.

Eastern Point Beach is a small, sandy beach located at the mouth of the Thames River in Groton, Connecticut. It is a great place to bring your family as there is a supervised swimming area, shallow water, and a playground.
Public Health - Seattle & King County has lifted the no-contact advisory for Richmond Beach Saltwater Park. The park is now open for water contact recreation. Water sample results now show there is no longer a public health risk.

The river became a repository for waste, with leaking cesspits and rubbish reducing many of its tributaries to running sewers.
The River Thames (at London Bridge, where the tides are measured) has a depth of just 66 feet (20 metres). That doesn't really compare to the deepest rivers in the world.
Montague Holbein. Holbein was a noted endurance swimmer, and on 25 July 1899 he covered 43 miles – the longest Thames swim ever recorded at the time – from Blackwall to Gravesend and back. It took him just over 12 hours, using a slow but powerful stroke described as “half-side, half-back”.
Downtown Richmond is generally a safe area to visit during the day time.

Richmond upon Thames is the safest borough in London. The overall crime rate in Richmond upon Thames in 2022 was 60 crimes per 1,000 people. This compares favourably to London's overall crime rate, coming in 37% lower than the London rate of 95 per 1,000 residents.

This section of the River Thames has much of interest en- route with activity on the water, the mixed landscapes of parkland and town, and historic landmarks. The trail is suitable for all abilities by either canoe or kayak in normal river conditions.
Yes you can canoe or kayak on the Thames or use any type of craft on the non-tidal River Thames between Cricklade Bridge and Teddington Lock, and the short section of the tidal River Thames between Teddington Lock and the Port of London Authority's boundary, including backwaters and marinas.
The Canal is designed for swimming, stand-up paddleboarding and kayaking, and it also provides an accessible pathway for water taxis to transport passengers from the V&A Waterfront to the CTICC.

The municipal borough was abolished in 1965, when local-government reorganisation transferred Richmond from Surrey to Greater London. Since 1965 Richmond has formed part of the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames. As of 2011 it had a population of 21,469 (in the North Richmond and South Richmond wards).
