Like TikTok, the social media platform that made it famous, Shein is an export of the blossoming, authoritarian version of hyper-capitalism currently positioning China as a global superpower. Founded in 2008 by Chris Xu, the brand signals a new chapter for the e-tailer industry: hyper-fast-fashion.

Even if Shein established (or has established) steadfast procedures to reduce waste and energy consumption, it's impossible to be sustainable with such a high production rate. In other words, Shein is inherently unsustainable.

Shein's target audience are price-driven customers who love online shopping from all over the world. The most common purchases on the website come from: Gen Z consumers, mostly women. Parents of children from 1 to 15 years old.

In 2020, Shein faced controversy for selling a $2.50 necklace featuring a swastika. It wasn't simply a case of the company's design resembling the infamous anti-Semitic symbol. The offending item was literally labeled “metal swastika pendant necklace” on the website.
