Saint David Attenborough (as we call him) inspired us to set up a local milkround in Colne, Lancashire, in 2018.
Milk and More also works with an app and includes parts of London – and the milkmen aim to deliver by 7am. Not every milkman takes empties. The Modern Milkman, however, does so. It's a small company which matches customers with local suppliers, delivers three times a week and takes away the bottles to wash and reuse.

The company's growth has resulted in a revenue increase of 1,000 per cent in 2020 alone, it reports. But it started with one round and a few hundred customers - it now has more than 400 rounds and has more than 100,000 customers, says Mr Mellin.
Milk & More says that in order to protect the jobs of hundreds of colleagues and suppliers, it made the decision to become an online-only business in December 2020. However, “due to the health crisis and the lockdown”, it decided to delay the process. The company says 80% of its business is already online.

Milk & More was bought by dairy giant Müller from Dairy Crest in December 2015 and has a national workforce of 1,100 milkmen and women (75% are franchisees) delivering more than 100m pints of milk in glass bottles every year.
Why is milk in glass bottles so expensive?
While glass milk bottles have become lighter over the years, some 40% lighter than they were 20 years ago. read more. The weight of a glass bottle is significantly heavier than a plastic one. It is therefore very costly, both financially and in terms of carbon emissions to transport.
Fresh milk should easily survive being outside for 8 hours, especially at this time of year (unless of course you live somewhere far sunnier than I do!) Ours lasts a good 3/4 days from delivery, and so it should if it's fresh out of the cow!!!
Once you've enjoyed your drinks, just rinse the bottles and leave them on your doorstep before your next delivery day. Your milkman will then collect them for you, and they will be re-used as much as possible. On average, each bottle is used 25 times!

And the advent of cheap milk in grocery stores didn't help much. But the milkman (and woman) is now making a comeback in America, as companies that deliver milk right to your door have experienced a resurgence during the pandemic.

Why don't we use glass milk bottles?
By using glass bottles, milk manufacturers open their product up to light oxidation. This reaction between light and nutrients in the milk is much more likely to occur in glass packaging than in traditional plastic or cardboard cartons and causes essential amino acids like tryptophan and tyrosine to break down.
In the 1950s, glass was becoming too hard to manage and keep up with. It made the crates heavy, there were a lot of damages when transporting the bottles to and from home deliveries, and the quality factor of making sure they were properly cleaned before re-using became too much of a problem.
Milk contains tryptophan which is an amino acid that helps us sleep better. Tryptophan converts into serotonin, the hormone that gives you pleasure. Serotonin also increases the amount of melatonin in your body and melatonin is the hormone responsible for good sleep.
Our milk definitely tastes noticeably better and creamier than the supermarket equivalents. It probably also makes a big difference when it's delivered too.
Raw drinking milk and the law
The sale of raw drinking milk is legal in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. It can only be sold directly to the consumer by: registered milk production farms at the farm gate or farmhouse catering operation.
