"During the 1860-85 period generally colors were delicate, white, blue, gray, lilac, pink and pale brown; trimmings were often dark, such as black on soft pink and white, or bright blue on pale green-gray. Dresses of two colors and two textiles were typical.
In the 1860s it was fashionable for men's coats and jackets to be single-breasted and semi-fitted, extending to the mid thigh. Waistcoats were often collarless and single-breasted, and trousers were occasionally cut from a narrow check cloth. High, starched collars were worn with cravats and neck-ties.

Women were literally carrying around yards and yards of fabric everywhere they went. With the invention of the hoop skirt, ladies could still get the enormous bell shape to their skirts without all that extra fabric. Because they were so lightweight, hoop skirts got bigger and bigger.
The 1860s saw the beginning of knickerbockers as boys' wear. These were wide-leg trousers that buttoned at the knee and came with a matching waistcoat and jacket. Boys wore white shirts and bow ties. Leg wear was long stockings and low-cut boots.

The Death of Mourning Dress
By the 1920s, the practice of wearing mourning dress began to subside. However, heavily Catholic countries still adhered to the practice, as did folks of the older generation. Well into the 20th century, men often wore black armbands; and black clothing was often worn at funerals.
This type of dress was known as a “round gown.” Around 1804, some dresses were made with button fastenings up the center back of the bodice; these were referred to as frocks (Davidson 26). Dresses saw minor changes during the 1800s, losing much of the rounded volume of the previous decade.
Women wore knee-length prairie skirts, red or blue gingham dresses or suede fringed skirts derived from Native American dress. Saloon girls wore short red dresses with corsets, garter belts and stockings.
Redingote, which comes from French for riding coat, was an overcoat, usually long, sometimes open in the front, worn to protect the clothes underneath and for warmth. In the 1700s redingotes were plain long coats, but in the 1800s they became stylish, and fancier with each passing decade.
