What did brides wear in the Renaissance?
During the Middle Ages and Renaissance, colors had symbolic meanings and wedding dresses were made in a range of colors. Blue was a popular choice as it represented chastity but brides could also choose green, red, yellow or any other color.
Wedding celebrations could go on for several days, involving a succession of parades, processions, spectacles, performances, games, and meals. Beginning in the fifteenth century, the ancient Roman practice of declaiming custom-written poems celebrating the union was revived.
Many times as in the case of nobility, marriages were arranged as a way to reach social and political gain. The family of the bride was required to present a dowry to the husband which often padded the husbands wealth. After marriage a woman's body and possessions became the property of her husband.
A sum of money or other, usually fungible, assets handed by a wife's family, most often by her father, to her hus‐ band, dowry was the wife's property.
Instead of a white gown, medieval brides usually wore dresses in deep jewel tones. Blue was a common choice because it symbolized purity. For wealthier ladies, gowns were made of expensive, luxurious fabrics like velvet, silk, and satin, and rich hues of red and gold were popular.
One common belief about the Renaissance is that children, especially girls, married young. In some noble houses marriages were indeed contracted at a young age, for reasons of property and family alliance, but in fact the average age of marriage was quite old--in the middle twenties.

The family in the Renaissance was somewhat like the modern family in that it consisted of the parents and children, but it was in many ways different. The Renaissance family could also consist of grandparents, widowed mothers, and, in some cases, unmarried sisters.
While men and women have equal rights in law, society is still largely male-dominated. Within the family dynamic, the man is usually the patriarch and considered the primary income earner. Traditionally, a woman was expected to fulfil roles of matrimony and motherhood.
The king would usually wear a well-embellished tunic with gold-work thread as a basic dress. On top of it, a surcoat was often worn which depicted the emblem of the King and his family. Robes and coats were also part of the King's costume at certain occasions.
Bride's Dress
The bride does not wear a white wedding dress, they wear their best gown and kirtle (petticoat). Colors were usually red, blue, green, yellow, grey, black, orange, or tan. A wedding ring was a symbol for commitment.
The bride would typically wear her finest dress to the ceremony, even if it was a dark color. In fact, many brides wore black during this time. Only a few colors were avoided, such as green, which was then considered unlucky.
The Renaissance color palette also featured realgar and among the blues azurite, ultramarine and indigo. The greens were verdigris, green earth and malachite; the yellows were Naples yellow, orpiment, and lead-tin yellow. Renaissance browns were obtained from umber.
