What happened to the mall in Fast Times at Ridgemont High?
The famous galleria, Valley Girl central, seen also in Commando and Chopping Mall, was damaged in the 1994 Northridge earthquake and much has subsequently been remodelled as an open-air galleria.
The most bitchin' mall of the 1980's – the Sherman Oaks Galleria! As you probably already know this is where they filmed 'totally awesome' flicks like "Fast Times at Ridgemont High!" (also known as the Ridgemont Mall after the success of that film).
The mall closed in April 1999 for a major renovation and reopened in 2002 as an open-air center which was quite different from its previous incarnation.

Was originally written to be filmed at the Beverly Center shopping mall, but they charged too much money, so the film was shot mostly at Sherman Oaks Galleria (where Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982) and Commando (1985) had been filmed). The Beverly Center was used for some exteriors.

Why do they smell the paper in Fast Times?
After the paper is passed out, the students put the page up to their noses and deeply inhale. This was a popular school ritual of the '60s, '70s and early '80s as photocopying machines were very expensive, so ditto machines were used. The resulting copies did not get you high but they smelled good.
Jennifer Jason Leigh was 20 years old when she made her appearance in the film. She is currently 58 years old. Judge Reinhold was 25 years old in the film and she is now 63 years old. Robert Romanus was 26 years old and is 64 years old now.
Trivia (8) Phoebe Cates' film debut. Cates was 17 years of age when she starred in this movie and did the nude scenes. The film was of two movies that Cates starred in 1982, the other was Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982).
