What is the belt on a tuxedo called?
A cumme*rbund is a broad waist sash, usually pleated, which is often worn with single-breasted dinner jackets (or tuxedos).
The cumme*rbund is worn around the waist, placed on top of a shirt and pants. It does not attach to the clothing. Before you put on your cumme*rbund, always turn it so the pleats are facing up. (Remember, you won't catch any crumbs if the pleats are down.)
Tuxedo pants also do not have belt loops. This means you are, under no circ*mstances, to wear a belt with a tuxedo. If you need a little extra help keeping them in place, opt for suspenders instead.
You don't typically wear a belt under your cumme*rbund, so if you need some extra help keeping your pants in place, clip on a pair of suspenders before you put on your cumme*rbund and jacket. People won't be able to see the suspenders, but you should still wear a black or white pair just in case your jacket slips.
Tuxedo pants have a stripe (sometimes called a braid) down the outer leg seam. The stripe is usually made from the same material as the jacket lapel.
cumme*rbunds are rapidly approaching “old-fashioned” status, and we won't go out of our way to recommend you wear one. But if you must wear one, do it only with a tuxedo, and match the material of your cumme*rbund with the material of your lapels (sorry, hot pink cumme*rbunds).
cumme*rbunds are an essential part of black tie etiquette and they give formal suits a finished appeal. cumme*rbunds are used to cover the unsightly bunching that occurs when a shirt is tucked into trousers and they also provide an aesthetic benefit to your overall ensemble.
Generally, you wear a cumme*rbund along with a tuxedo to black tie events. If you choose not to wear a cumme*rbund, you can wear a formal waistcoat (aka a vest) instead. A waistcoat can provide a little more warmth in cooler temperatures, and sometimes it coordinates better if your jacket has peaked lapels.
To get the right size, simply take your off-the-rack pant waist size and go one size bigger. For example, if you wear pants with a 34 waist, you should wear a 36 sized belt. Most belts have 5 holes and when trying on a belt, a good rule of thumb is that the third (or middle) hole should be the one that should be used.
But the reality is, unless you're getting a custom suit with waist pull tabs, (which is definitely a cool detail we highly recommend) your suit has belt loops.
What ties go with tuxedo?
“A slim (not skinny) satin or grosgrain silk necktie works best with a tuxedo,” says Alyssa DiMarcantonio, head designer for Damari. She also adds that a tie should always match the tuxedo lapels. “Traditionally that means a black silk tie, but if your lapels are navy, go with a navy tie,” she advises.

cumme*rbunds are meant to be worn with the pleats facing upward. Downward facing pleats are actually incorrect. We'll get to why in a second. Also, because cumme*rbunds are waist coverings, they should be worn at the natural waist.
