The most common ethnicity among runway models is White, which makes up 65.4% of all runway models. Comparatively, there are 14.5% of the Hispanic or Latino ethnicity and 10.6% of the Black or African American ethnicity.
In a breakdown of the statistics, 8.3% of models featured in ads were black, 4% were Asian and 3.8% were Hispanic. Although low, the percentage of non-white models has actually increased from 2015 when the total was 84.7%.
The global fashion market is expanding every day, but often, the global fashion runways do not reflect that reality. On average, black models make up for six percent of models used on the runway during the fashion month calendar.
Woods points to an unnamed designer that says black women are stereotyped as “too strong for the clothes.” White models therefore make better "hangers" because there's little risk that their personalities will outshine the clothes.
'We have decided we will no longer be casting or featuring white/caucasian models in our advertising and official campaign imagery in order to promote more opportunities for racial and ethnic minorities,' MOGA said in a statement.
This is considered "plus-size" by fashion industry standards. If that's surprising, it might make sense to hear this: Just 2 percent of women shown in media images are plus-size.
The modeling industry is notoriously cutthroat. It's long been plagued by allegations of mistreatment of underage girls, lack of diversity, sexual harassment, promoting an unhealthy lifestyle and just about any other horrifying cliché that has ever been ascribed to fashion.
The median age of models at runway shows recognised by the Fashion Model Directory was 23 in 2019, up from 21 in 2014, with similar increases in age diversity for the catalogue, lookbook and advertising shoots they have on file.
Most models start their careers when they're still teenagers and often leave the industry in the mid to late 20s – Victoria's Secret models overall, tend to be older than average. All of the models on this list stayed with Victoria's Secret well past their “prime” and many have since become household names.

Adut Akech made history by being only the second model in the fashion house's 108-year-long existence to close the show as a Chanel bride.

Runway models must have precise measurements so they're able to fit the clothes that designers are going to be showing to their clients. Their measurements are usually no greater than 34 inches around the bust, 23 inches around the waist, and 34 inches around the hips.

The fashion industry simply doesn't envisage its goods being bought by black customers – even Oprah Winfrey has been dissed by Hermès – and therefore doesn't bother trying to relate to them. So it's not (always) that the fashion industry thinks that only white people are beautiful, as many have understandably assumed.
The Japanese fashion and cosmetics industries have used many White female haafu models, reflecting Japanese women's desire for light skin, Caucasian facial features, and kawaii. Non- White female haafu models are excluded from Japa- nese beauty culture because they do not have the qualities Japanese women desire.
Height is typically between 5'9″-6″, bust is between 32″-36″, waist is between 22″-26″, and hips should be between 33″-35″. Of course most woman don't meet these standards and that is why fashion models generally get paid the most and work the most.
"When we put the white model in Indian clothes, it is a cultural exchange. It shows India's economic self-confidence," Tiwari said. "Of course, it also caters to the general feeling that 'fair' and 'beautiful' go together. For a rickshaw-puller who earns $2 a day, seeing a fair-skinned woman is an escape, a fantasy."
Modeling is a kind of vicarious learning in which direct instruction need not occur. Indeed, one may not be aware that another is modeling his or her behavior. Modeling may teach a new behavior, influence the frequency of a previously learned behavior, or increase the frequency of a similar behavior.
This is why it was a major moment when Angolan-born supermodel Maria Borges became the first Black model to walk the runway with her natural hair in 2015. The following year, not one but three models of color with Afro-textured hair walked the show.
Perhaps the most famous Black supermodel, Naomi Campbell was officially discovered at age 15 while shopping in London, though she had appeared in a Bob Marley music video as a child. After she was scouted, she became a top supermodel of the late '80s and '90s, and remains a major figure in the industry today.

Karen Alexander is an African American model best known for being one of first Black models to be featured in Sports Illustrated. She appeared on international editions of Vogue, Harper's Bazaar and Elle and landed campaigns for brands like CoverGirl and Tiffany & Co.
