What size should my beret be?
Measure the widest part of your head with a tape measure. Place the tape measure an index finger above the ear; bring it across the mid forehead, completely circling the head. Note the inches, and see the chart below. If your measurement falls between sizes, choose the next largest size.
It shouldn't be too tight but it shouldn't be too loose at the same time. You also need to be careful that you don't damage the outer fuzzy layer of the beret. This inside lining is the main part of every single beret and its purpose is to protect the hat from possible damage before the owner starts wearing it.
Decide how wide you would like your beret to be, around 12 inches (30 cm) in diameter is probably good, and draw a circle that diameter on your pattern paper.

Shape Your Beret
Adjust it to proper fit. Pull the cardboard stiffener so it is centered over your left eye and smooth the material over your head. Fold the extra material over to the right forward side of your head, pulling it down towards your right ear. It should just touch your ear or go just below that.
Round Face = Hats Worn Farther Back, Fedoras
Avoid: Berets, circular brims, hats that cut across forehead. This one is pretty easy. If you have a round face shape, try and steer clear of hats that have a similar shape (aka round).
The beret is worn flat on top of the head about three-quarters of the way up the forehead and an inch or so behind the ears. The brim is tucked in to keep the hat in place.
For this style of wear, place the beret on your head so that the band lands right on your hairline, then slowly stretch the back until it sits at the back of your head.

To crochet a beret or tam, decide the circumference at the widest point of the brim (usually about 30 to 44 inches). The calculator will do the work of providing the number of increases to that point, and then it will determine the number of decreases to get to the head size.
Can anyone wear a beret?
People always say I have this rare "gift" of being able to pull the hat off, but anyone can wear a beret by making a few deliberate styling choices.
- Step 1: Place the beret on your head about ¾ of the way up your forehead and an inch or two behind your ears.
- Step 2: Tuck the brim under, to secure your hat in place. ...
- Step 3: Pull one side of your beret down, being sure to pull from the crease that gives your hat its shape.

Berets vary in colour according to the regiment, and carry a badge (sometimes on a coloured shield-shaped patch) which is of gilt for officers, silver for non-commissioned officers and bronze for other ranks. Members of cavalry units all wear silver-coloured badges.
As with normal shaving, it is much better to do this when the thing is wet. Shaving the beret makes it easier to shape and gets rid of all the fluff, giving it a smarter appearance.
Because of its flexibility, the beret was ideal for lowranking military uniforms. Originally worn by nineteenth-century French seamen, it was adopted during World War I for alpine troops. British Field Marshal Montgomery popularized the beret during World War II as a badge of honor for elite military units.
HEART-SHAPED FACE
You need to slim your forehead to make it appear more narrow. So wear your hat deep on the brow. Hats with medium to large brims are great such as a fedora, boater, cloche, homburg or beret. These are all good choices as they balance out the width of your forehead.
Hats for Long Faces
Wide brims: Sunhats, straw hats and other hats with wide brims suit a long face. Select one with a brim that fits across your forehead to diminish the look of an elongated face, if that's what you want from your hat.
What hat looks good on a fat face?
Long. You'll look best in hats with wide brims, cowboy hats, sunhats, or hats that cut across the forehead, to shorten the potentially exaggerated effect of a long face. Avoid beanies for this very reason.

The beret is worn so that the headband (edge binding) is straight across the forehead, 1 inch above the eyebrows. The flash is positioned over the left eye, and the excess material is draped over to the right ear, extending to at least the top of the ear, and no lower than the middle of the ear.
If you do decide to step out in the chilly seasons, sporting one along with a dress coat and knee-high boots is a classic look that everyone should wear at least once in their life. Ideal for winter ensembles on cold nights, a beret makes the perfect accompaniment to date nights and upscale occasions.
If you're planning on wearing your beret regularly, matching it your hair color ensures that it always looks coordinated. Blondes should choose white or beige berets, brunettes should choose brown berets, and anyone with black hair should choose black berets. Wear a beret with a feminine outfit.

Once the beret is formed on your head, take the beret off, put a paper clip behind to hold the excess over the flash (optional but recommended), and place it on a flat surface with the excess part hanging off the edge. Wait a day for it to dry.
Using a tape measure, measure your head about one-half inch above your eyebrows where your hat will rest. Be certain that the tape measure is straight, not twisted. Alternatively, you can use piece of string to measure your head, and then measure the length of the string with a ruler.
The beret is a round, flat hat which is usually made from woven, hand-knit, or crocheted wool. The commercial production of Basque style berets began in the 17th century in the Oloron-Sainte-Marie area of southern France.
