There is a Jewish tradition stemming from the Talmud, that the descendants of Esau would eventually become the Romans, and to a larger extent, all Europeans.

Edom is an ancient land bordering ancient Israel. Present-day Edom is now southwestern Jordan, located between the Dead Sea and the Gulf of Aqaba.

It is important to note that God when speaking to the Israelites, referred to Edom as "your brothers the sons of Esau" (Deut 2:4). The same meaning can be found in the expression "You shall not abhor an Edomite, for he is your brother" (Deut 23:8 [7]).
