Why did Shane lie to Lori?
From the beginning, Shane lied to Lori (Sarah Wayne Callies) and Carl (Chandler Riggs) that he for certain knew that his longtime friend Rick had died in the hospital. He said what he needed to say to protect Lori and Carl and get them to leave the hospital that he thought was a death trap.
Shane was shocked to the core when he found Rick alive and well among the returning scavenger group, and Lori, blaming Shane and feeling he lied to her about her husband's supposed "death" in order to seduce and have sex with her, ends their affair.
Secret Relationship: Subverted; Lori thinks her affair with Shane is this, but when she admits the truth to Rick, he reveals that he knew about it already and had in fact figured it out almost as soon as he was reunited with them in Atlanta.
He is a former sheriff in king county and best friend of Rick Grimes. While initially a heroic character, he starts going through a dark turn due to his obsession of Lori, which leads to his conflict with Rick and later death.

In the concluding sequence of the episode, Lori admits to Rick that she had an affair with Shane in the belief that her husband was dead. Kirkman stated that the writers wanted to "wrap up to a certain extent", and opined that such revelations would add more tension between the characters.
Many fans have thought all along that Shane was Judith's father. Since Maury Povich isn't around to do a DNA test how can Rick be sure that Judith isn't his baby? He knows because the timeline of the show makes it impossible for him to be Judith's father.
