The trade in books within the Islamic world was one of the most important aspects of the university where thousands upon thousands of manuscripts were written. The Sankoré Masjid was capable of housing 25,000 students and had one of the largest libraries in the world, housing between 400,000 and 700,000 manuscripts.
Djinguereber mosque, in common with most buildings in city-centre Timbuktu, is constructed in mud brick; more elegantly known as “earthen architecture”. It's a method in which layer upon layer of wet soil (“banco” or adobe) is rendered on to limestone rocks or onto bricks made from banco.

Few today know that the University of Sankore was founded in 989 AD by the erudite chief judge of Tumbuktu, Al-Qadi Aqib Ibn Mahmud. It was founded during the time of the Empire of Ghana, stayed relevant into the Empire of Mali, then survived another political transition into the time period of the Empire of Songhai.
So why Timbuktu? It was founded by Tuareg nomads in the 12th Century and within 200 years had become an immensely wealthy city, at the centre of important trading routes for salt and gold.
Mansa Musa (ruled 1312-1337) dressed in even wider trousers, which were made from about twenty pieces of a kind of cloth that only he was allowed to wear. Emblematic of his power, his weapons—all made of gold—stood near his throne. A page stood on his left holding a silk umbrella surmounted by a dome and a gold falcon.
Mansa Musa (about 1280 – about 1337) was an emperor (manse) of the Mali Empire during the 14th century. He became emperor in 1312. He was the first African ruler to be famous in all of Europe and the Middle East he was also the 9th emperor in his times. Historians say he was the richest person to have ever lived.
