Why were old bras so pointy?
The favored silhouette in the forties through the sixties was a cone-shaped, pointy chest (for whatever reason). Today's preferences for firm, lifted breasts are no more intended for the comfort of the wearer than the preferences of the past.
The bullet bra was built on the softly conical bras of the 1940s but with a much more defined finish. Bullet bra pads add fullness and emphasis to the bullet appearance. They are also great if your breasts are smaller or simply don't naturally fill out a bullet bra shape.

In France, the first modern bra was born, called the corselet gorge ("the well-being."), when Herminie Cadolle cut a corset into two separate undergarments — the top supported the breasts by means of straps, while the lower part was a corset for the waist. In 1905, they started selling these new "bras" alone.
Overwires and separators – these are used to create a certain look and do not really have a technical function, though their use can affect bra fit. Overwires go above the bust, separators (see below) go in between them as a design feature.

Do they still make pointy bras?
There a few old school makers of bullet bras still churning out these bras today. There is a whole new crop of cone bra makers for people who love vintage silhouettes, although this is admittedly a niche market in the post-Wonderbra era.
Those measurements were 5 ft. 5.5 inches tall; 35 inch bust; 22 inch waist (approximately 2-3 inches less than the average American woman in the 1950s and 12 inches less than average today); and 35 inch hips, with a bra size of 36D.
