Why won't my Cricut iron on vinyl stick to my shirt?
First things first, the most common reason your HTV may not be sticking to your shirt, sweater or whatever else you're applying it to may be because you're not using enough pressure. And pressure is important. Without it, your HTV projects may not be as long lasting as you would like.
The ideal temperature to use for heat transfer vinyl is between 260 ℉ to 315 ℉ (130 ℃ to 160 ℃) using medium pressure.
For example, Cricut Everyday Iron-on is “Cool Peel.” This means that you must allow the shirt to cool to the touch before removing the plastic liner. If you remove the liner while it's still warm, the iron-on vinyl may not adhere correctly.
If the HTV doesn't stick to the garment, increase the pressure of your heat press. The presence of a coating on the fabric could also be the reason why vinyl doesn't stick to the garment is the presence of a coating on the fabric, generally water-repellent or antimicrobial products.
Apply medium pressure with the iron for 25-30 seconds. Flip the material over and apply medium pressure with the iron to the back of the material for an additional 25-30 seconds.
Preheat material for 10 to 15 seconds. Place the design onto the preheated material. Heat each part of the design for 50 seconds with firm pressure. Let cool completely and remove the lining.
Both types of vinyl need heat and pressure to transfer an image to fabric. However, there are a few notable differences between the two. Iron-on is a special paper that is lightweight than HTV and can be applied in one layer. HTV is more effective with large designs and using a heat press is recommended.
Use Heat To Help Dry Adhesive
If your vinyl isn't sticking, you can use heat to affix it better. Use a hairdryer or heat gun on the surface of the self-adhesive vinyl while applying it to your desired surface. Using heat will help it conform to any uneven surfaces a little quicker.

For apparel blanks like t-shirts, hoodies, jeans, or anything else you will likely machine wash in the future, we recommend pre-washing the blank without fabric softener to pre-shrink the garment and remove chemicals that may prohibit strong adhesion.
What kind of shirt do you use for heat transfer vinyl?
The best kind of t-shirt for heat transfer are cotton, polyester, or cotton/poly blends. Regardless of the type of HTV you use, vinyl will have a good bond with the fabrics mentioned.
Depending on your machine, the type of transfer, and the blank this can be anywhere from 45 seconds to 3 minutes. If you're using a direct to garment printer this will change depending on ink and fabric.
Still having trouble? If you have cleaned your surface well with rubbing alcohol but your vinyl is still not sticking, try leaving the transfer tape on the vinyl for a bit after applying it onto the surface. Sometimes the vinyl's adhesive needs time to adhere to the surface a little better and bond.
Iron on patches may not stick to the fabric if they are applied at a temperature that is too low or if the heat level during washing is too high. High-speed washes can cause the adhesive to loosen and fall off of the patch, especially when using harsh detergents or hot water temperatures.
For adults, measure down 3" from the neckline along that vertical crease and that's where the top of the decal should begin. For kids, which is what I was working on in this example, I start a little higher, usually at about 2" below the neckline.

However, the ironing surface is then constantly heated up to the set temperature and electricity consumption increases. With older iron models or those with technical defects, however, a thermal overload can occur after a very long period of operation, which in the worst case can lead to a cable fire.
To successfully adhere the vinyl to a glass or plastic surface, you need to clean it first. Using alcohol on a cotton ball is the best way to prepare these type of surfaces. Just give it a few swipes and set it aside to dry.
Does rubbing alcohol make vinyl stick better?

10-15 seconds is the perfect pressing time. You don't want to scorch the adhesive by keeping the heat on too long and over pressing.
The temperatures are as follow: - Cricut Everyday Iron on's temperature should be 315 °F for 30 seconds, warm peel. - Cricut Foil Iron On's temperature should be 295 °F for 30 seconds, cool peel.
Once the Cricut heat press is ready, place it on top of the fabric. Make sure you're using a parchment paper underneath.
Inadequate pressure is one of the biggest reasons why HTV peels off shirts. Using a pressing pillow when pressing HTV onto shirts in a heat press helps provide more even and consistent pressure for better results.
You can iron on permanent vinyl on shirts or fabrics. You can use a regular iron or heat press but never a steam iron. Prior to application, avoid touching the sticky side of the vinyl to avoid leaving dirt or oil on the sticky layer.
HOW LONG WILL HEAT TRANSFERS LAST? With proper care of your garment (wash inside out on a cool wash, dry inside out on a washing line and iron inside out - no tumble drying or dry cleaning) the manufacturer recommends around 50 washes for the vinyl heat transfers, which do eventually crack and fade.
What Type of Cricut Iron On Vinyl Works Best On Shirts? For cotton and polyester, Cricut Everyday Iron On will be your best choice for “regular” vinyl, and almost all of Cricut's specialty vinyls like glitter and foil will work as well.

For most heat transfer applications, the temperature should be set between 350 to 375°F (177 to 191°C). Adjust the Pressure – the pressure of the press is based on the thickness of the fabric; thicker fabric requires less pressure.
Do Cricut vinyl shirts last?

So do you need transfer tape? In short, probably. You can move vinyl from its backing to another location without transfer tape, but if there are any spaces or intricate details it will be very difficult.
Ensure you're using a firm, even surface. Ironing boards and plastic surfaces have some give in them that don't provide the firm, even surface needed for successful results. Re-touch the material with heat for an additional 10-15 seconds.
Set your iron to the Cotton/Linen setting. Make sure steam setting is OFF for steam irons. Preheat material for 10 to 15 seconds. Place the design onto the preheated material.
Some HTV does apply at different settings, but standard heat transfer vinyl should be applied on the “linen” setting of your household iron.
