2025 is Already Stacked to Be Another 2023 in Video Games (2024)

2024 has certainly been off to a great start with successful releases like Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and Palworld already under its belt, and with others such as Dragon's Dogma 2 and Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree still on the way, the year is far from over. However, 2023 set an unprecedented bar for gaming by being packed with some of the biggest releases in recent memory, many of them garnering significant praise. Now, although 2024 still has plenty of time left to prove itself, 2025's game release lineup already looks poised to be another 2023 in video games with heavy hitters such as Death Stranding 2 scheduled for release.

A large part of what made 2023 such a fruitful year for gaming was the high level of anticipation surrounding some of its biggest releases. The success of titles like Hogwarts Legacy, Marvel's Spider-Man 2, and Baldur's Gate 3 was arguably fueled by the length of time fans had to wait for them to arrive, and then the ability of those games to exceed expectations in many respects. This, and the sheer number of releases like Death Stranding 2 already lined up for 2025, will likely make next year one of 2023's strongest contenders, perhaps even more so than 2024 may be.

Death Stranding 2: On the Beach is Kojima Productions' sequel to Death Stranding and will put players back into the shoes of Sam as he explores the now-connected in an attempt to save humanity from extinction. Grand Theft Auto 6 is Rockstar's next installment in the Grand Theft Auto franchise and promises to be "the biggest, most immersive evolution of the Grand Theft Auto series yet." Monster Hunter Wilds is the upcoming installment in the Monster Hunter series, and players can expect a new world, new monsters, and new gear to craft and collect. Lastly, Pokemon Legends: Z-A will take players to Lumiose City as the first Pokemon game to take place entirely in one city.

Bungie's Marathon is the highly anticipated reboot of its original 1994 first-person shooter, and early reports suggest the game could be released sometime in 2025. Finally, Path of Exile 2 is the upcoming sequel to Grinding Gear Games' hit ARPG and currently has a beta scheduled for June 7, 2024, that will last until its full release, either in late 2024 or early 2025.

Nintendo's Next Console Is Reportedly Arriving in 2025

The biggest news for Nintendo fans is the possibility of the developer releasing its next console in 2025, currently only referred to as the "Switch 2." The console was originally rumored to launch sometime in late 2024, but more recent reports suggest it could be released in early 2025 instead. The good news is that a 2025 Switch 2 release could also mean Metroid Prime 4 is finally on the horizon, but that remains to be seen. At the very least, with every game confirmed and the possibility of even more big titles and a new Nintendo console, 2025 already looks like another big year for gaming.
