1. Costumes Are Reused

This might come as a surprise, but the production houses spend a lot of money on curating versatile looks for the actors. So, finally, when the film is shot and all the work is done, these costumes are packed and stored in boxes. The clothes are then used for another movie, plausibly for junior artists or background dancers. It is also said these costumes are redesigned in a completely new manner.

Renowned stylist and costume designer, Akshay Tyagi says "Usually these costumes get stored in inventories over the years and as projects develop with productions we get access to reuse them and repurpose them towards the new looks. It usually doesn’t get used for any primary characters but gets dispersed into crowd scenes and saves on bulk spending for dressing. It’s a super purposeful way of reusing and recycling and repurposing items."

Ayesha Khanna, who was a costume designer for YRF movies like Band Baaja Baaraat and Ladies Vs Ricky Bahl mentioned in one of the interviews that the clothes worn in movies are stored and are later reused for another film. For example, the outfit worn by Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in Kajra Re, was then utilised in Band Baaja Baarat for a dancer in the background. The outfit was mix and matched, for no one to know it has been used earlier, in another movie.

2. Celebrities Take Them Home

Celebrities, sometimes, are also allowed to take these costumes home as a memoir or a souvenir from the movie, if they like an outfit or are attached to their character in the movie.

Akshay says

"I simply help curate and get the items needed and if the actor wishes to take it that’s between producers and clients."

Deepika Padukone's character as Naina from Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani was one of her power-packed performances. The actress took home the glasses she wore in the movie. Even Rishi Kapoor was fond of having sweaters and he collected them, post his movies.

Sometimes celebrities also have to wear heavy costumes in their movies. Case in point, Anushka Sharma who wore a gown that weighed 35 kilos in Bombay Velvet. Turns out, that even high-end celebrity designers, for example, Manish Malhotra, Anju Modi etc. take home the costumes that they design for a particular movie, which is what happened with Anushka's emerald green gown.

When the making of a movie is finally over, these clothes are then stored in huge boxes, labelled with the movie names and are then sent to studios,

Akshay Tyagi says

"The costumes are packed, but we never know what project will call for what items. Producers utilise this inventory to then see if any designers on the project can make use of it.

He also mentioned

"In Race 3, a lot of inventory towards the larger scenes and songs were used to curb expenses and stay within the budget for large requirements. The inventory was from the previous instalment of the movie, Race"

Even in the movie, Bang Bang, there were multiple action scenes and there were costumes made for it, which was eventually used for another project, to ensure there is no wastage.

4. Costumes Are Also Auctioned

Many costumes that are used in movies are put up for auction for charitable causes. Salman Khan's towel, that was used in the song, Jeene Ke Hai Chaar Din, was put up for auction at Rs 1.42 Lakh. The money was later given to the charity.

Even the costumes that were used in Aishwarya's and Rajinikanth's movie Robot, were quite expensive, but they were later put up for auction at a high bid and it all went to charity.
