Discount grocer Aldi, with about 20 stores in the D.C. region and at least four more openings announced for this year, is on track to become the nation's third-largest grocery store chain, behind Kroger and Walmart. The German company said it will open 150 new stores across the U.S.

Aldi said Thursday its acquisition of Southeastern Grocers, the parent company of Winn-Dixie and Harveys, had been completed. Aldi said it expects that about 50 stores will begin the conversion process in the latter half of 2024, with the majority of them reopening as Aldi in 2025.
