Why was avant-garde controversial? ›

Because of its radical nature and the fact that it challenges existing ideas, processes and forms; avant-garde artists and artworks often go hand-in-hand with controversy.

French for “advanced guard,” originally used to denote the vanguard of an army and first applied to art in France in the early 19th century. In reference to art, the term means any artist, movement, or artwork that breaks with precedent and is regarded as innovative and boundaries-pushing.

It's entirely up to your taste in art. I'd say that Tate Britain is the better one for the average art-viewer; the work on display is more accessible and the layout of the museum less overwhelming. But for those who enjoy modern art, Tate Modern can't be missed.

In this tradition it is generally accepted that the avant-garde began in the mid-nineteenth century with the Realist artists Gustave Courbet (1819-77) and Jean-François Millet (1814-75). Courbet challenged the establishment by exhibiting out-with the recognised artistic Academies and their Salons in France.

The majority of Tate users are regulars – 70% of all visits to the website are made by a small proportion of regulars. These users tend to be arts professionals, students or teachers. First timers represent 20% of all visits and make up approximately half the users.

When its role was changed to include the national collection of modern art as well as the national collection of British art, in 1932, it was renamed the Tate Gallery after sugar magnate Henry Tate of Tate & Lyle, who had laid the foundations for the collection.
