Much like fashion, makeup, and hair, society decided to celebrate a certain body type throughout the decades. Beauty standards often change to show people what body is deemed perfect. Therefore, if you love your body, you do not have to change because of some beauty standard.

1920s

During the 20s, fashion favored very straight bodies. Therefore, straight figures with minimal curves as well as small chests were sought after in the 20s. Additionally, this decade made the bob very popular.

1930s to 1950s

While in the 20s the lack of curves was sought after, between the 30s and 50s, curves made a huge comeback. It was during this time that curvy women like Marilyn Monroe were it girls of fashion. During these decades, small waist and curvy bodies made the hourglass figure popular.

1960s

The 60s encouraged women to lose their curves and go for a more adolescent figure, much like in the 20s. In this decade, small shoulders, straight figures, and long, lean legs were celebrated. One of the women that were very popular in this decade was Twiggy, who had this type of figure.

1970s

Here comes the 70s, a mixture between the curves from the 50s and the straight figure from the 60s and 20s. In this decade, broad shoulders, small hips, and long, lean legs were celebrated. The fashion during the 70s consisted of wide-leg pants and bell sleeves.

1980s

In the 80s, beauty standards start to shift to an athletic aspect. During this decade, women were encouraged to be lean, strong, and toned. Therefore, the hourglass figure and toned legs, arms, and stomach were celebrated in the 80s.

1990s

In the 90s, we saw the rise of the supermodel. This gave way to beauty standards leaning toward a very thin body with no curves. Additionally, the fashion during this decade focused a lot on showing women’s stomachs and wearing oversized clothing.

In the 2000s, we saw a shift to a healthier way of being thin. While fashion still focused on showing women’s stomachs, beauty standards celebrated washboard abs and toned bodies.

During this decade, Kim Kardashian started her rise to the top. Therefore, the slim hourglass figure became very popular. Additionally, the Kardashians popularized large bottoms, full eyebrows and highly airbrushed perfect skin.

It is important to remember that no matter your body type, beauty standards are just what has been popular for a decade.
