What to say after reading scripture in church? ›

10) Think about an appropriate way to close the reading. Some common expressions are: “This is the Word of God to us”; “May God bless the reading of his Word”; or “May God help us to apply these words to our lives.”

Say something like, “This morning's Scripture reading is from Leviticus chapter 1. You will find this on page 81 of the Bible in the pew rack in front of you.” Give ample time for people to turn there (a full 20 seconds). Begin reading after saying something like, “Hear the Word of the Lord” or “Let's hear God's Word.”

Pace yourself. Don't rush through the reading of Scripture. A common mistake is to speak too quickly, not allowing space and time for the meaning of the text to sink in, or for the listeners to consider the words they are hearing.

Even a simple “Amen” confidently punctuates a Scripture reading. Some service leaders end their readings with the reminder that “this is the word of the Lord.” Others use a statement like “blessed be the word of the Lord” to encourage the congregation in believing what it has heard.
