‘California Casual’ hard to define (2024)

Gayle Hepner does not have a precise guide for callers worried about what to wear to the Center Against Sexual Assault’s Saturday fundraiser in the new, downtown Hemet location of the Diamond Valley Arts Center.

Hepner, executive director of CASA, said her intentionally vague response disappoints callers. She simply wants them to wear something nice and comfortable.

To help, readers were asked to define what should be worn to the dinner and Frank Sinatra tribute concert in Simon Chu’s beautifully restored, red-brick, 1920s-era building at 123 N. Harvard St.

California Casual – rooted in the state’s beach, golf and margarita-sipping cultures – is more formal than Hemet Casual, the combo of shorts, T-shirts and flip-flops. Call it Hemet Formal.

Just what is it? Readers’ interpretations varied.

“Comfortable, but not poolside, beach or park wear. No ripped clothing. Stylish, but not fancy,” Therese Steadman wrote.

Russ Utz favors the casual part of the fashion style: “California Casual sounds like flip-flops and whatever covers ya up.”

Hepner is so curious about how people attending the event will dress that a dozen or more California Casual wearers might be selected to saunter across the arts center stage in an impromptu fashion show.

“You don’t want to wear jean shorts with holes and flip-flops,” she said.

“Well, I do have a sparkly pair of flips-flops,” Hepner added. “I will have to withdraw my comment about flip-flops.”

Connie Hall, vice president of operations of Central County United Way, concurs with flip-flops.

“Flip-flops, Capris and a cool top,” Hall said, describing her definition of California Casual, Hemet style. “I prefer Palm Springs casual and not just any flip-flops will do. The more bling the better.

“Bling on the sunglasses, too, at least for me. Not everyone is into that, but sharp-dressed California Casual comes with sunglasses,” she said.

Howard Rosenthal, a Hemet-based commercial real estate specialist who often organizes fundraising dinners, thinks California Casual is more proper.

“Pants, shoes, sport shirt, no shorts and casual dresses,” Rosenthal advised. “Men: shirts with collars like golf, Hawaiian, button-down. Casual yet neat and tasteful.”

Hemet Mayor Linda Krupa did not need help. “My attire will be a long summer dress with jacket and wedge sandals,” she said.

Robin Navarro graciously agreed to model California Casual for a photograph along with her fellow Assistance League of Hemacinto volunteers Jim and Bonnie Brigham.

The three retired teachers went on a little shopping spree at the Assistance League’s thrift shop at 180 N. Girard St. in Hemet. The thrift shop, known for having quality clothing, is on summer hiatus during August and will reopen in September.

Navarro said an entire section of the store could be categorized as California Casual.

Navarro and Bonnie Brigham found slacks, sandals and stylish tops to represent the California Casual style. Jim Brigham styled the Tommy Bahama look in a Hawaiian shirt with a beach scene, shorts and comfortable black shoes. The used items they picked ranged in price from just $2 to $8.

“Casual seems to be the rule these days,” Tom Anderson of Banning wrote. “I can walk into Ruth’s Chris or Fleming’s restaurants in shorts, casual shirt and sandals.”

Lucille Hedges of San Jacinto reported the California Casual style she has observed in Hemet:

“Suggested wardrobe for the good ol’ boys: The Do: Graying hair tied in a ponytail with a few wisps escaping. A fairly recently laundered tee that falls almost to the waist, exposing shoulder-to-finger tip ‘sleeves’ of fading tattoos. Assorted sandals over knee-height socks.

“And for her: As a summer wrap, an ample muumuu cools and covers. Flip-flops and bared toes are the in complement to this studied fashion statement.”

Bill Tierney provided a definition in true California spirit that is simplest to follow.

“California Casual is wearing whatever you want, as long as it’s decent, and not worrying about opinions other people may have about your attire,” he wrote.
