Coachella typically allows only service animals and not pets inside the festival, but organizers appear to have made an exception for Nugget and Mali, a pair of malti-poos with magenta- and blue-dyed fur that can hardly walk a foot without posing for photos.
“I don’t know what the rules are,” said the dogs’ owner, Los Angeles-based clothing designer Larayia Gaston, adding “They go to a lot of festivals.”
Thanks to a non-toxic dye she uses on their fur, Gaston’s pups appear clothed head-to-toe in every color of the rainbow. Their Facebook and Instagram accounts chronicle their adventures.
Nugget, who’s 2, and Mali – short for Malachite – who’s 1, enjoy themselves to the bone.
“All they do is play, drink – they just had poke,” Gaston said. While her dogs sniffed the grass, festival fans continually stopped to ask about the animals, pet them or snap a photo.
One of the dogs likes to dance to music, and the other tries to sip beer when it has the opportunity, she said.
After a long day of walking and public attention, Gaston expects the dogs are “gonna be passed out.”
But, she said, to boost energy during their long day at the festival, “Every second they can take a nap, they do.”
