D vs. EE-Width: Cowboy Boot Widths Explained | Tecovas (2024)

You’ve heard of footwear widths like regular, standard, or wide, but what does EE mean in boots? Whether you’re shopping for your first pair of cowboy boots or it’s been a while since you’ve shopped, ensuring you order the correct size and width is crucial to how your boots will fit, feel, and perform.

While all Tecovas boots generally fit true to U.S. sizing, boot widths vary. This guide will teach you the difference between D vs. EE-width boots so you can easily find the most comfortable fit.

D vs. EE Boots Explained

In the world of cowboy boots, “D and “EE” represent boot widths. D represents an average width fitting narrow or standard width feet. EE-width boots are ½” wider than standard D-width boots.

EE vs. D Width: Which Is Right for Me?

If you know your feet are narrow or you have made it this far with no problem finding comfort in standard shoe width sizes, a D-width boot is likely right for you. If, on the other hand, you know you have wide feet or standard shoes and boot sizes have left you feeling cramped in the past, you may benefit from an EE-width boot. EE-width boots also provide more comfort for feet prone to swelling and discomfort.

To more accurately determine whether a D vs. EE boot width is right for you, measure the flat width across the ball of your foot. If your foot width measures between three to five inches, you’re likely a standard D-width.

If your foot’s width is measuring about 3.4 (smaller sizes) to 5.4 inches wide, it’s safe to assume an EE-width boot will fit you best. Or, if you’re somewhere in between a D and EE-width (otherwise known as an E-width), size up.

If you have very wide feet and are concerned that even EE-width boots may feel too snug, our square-toe boots provide even more wiggle room for you to enjoy, as shown below with The Doc in Cafe goat.
