Was Monica Dutton attacked previously?
In the first season of Yellowstone, Monica tries to stop a fight between two boys at the school where she works. She was unfortunately struck and suffered a serious injury. She was taken to the hospital, where medical professionals identified the type of brain injury she had experienced: an epidural hematoma. After having surgery, Monica started a long and drawn-out healing process.
In order to speed up the healing of her injury, Monica visits physical therapy while she is recovering. With so many difficulties in their lives, Monica and Kayce's relationship deteriorates as she recovers from her brain injury.
In season four, Monica's life is once again in danger. After Kayce calls to warn them that they might be in danger after narrowly escaping an attack, Monica and Tate find themselves the target of an attack. When a masked man breaks into their home, he attacks Monica and hurts her. His mother was about to be killed when Tate uses a rifle to shoot the intruder. The mother-and-son pair then travel to the bunkhouse in search of safety.
Later, Kayce discovers his wife and son hiding in their home's bedroom. Tate is evidently upset by the experience, as he hides under the bed. Tate is pulled out from under the bed by Kayce, who then holds him and reassures him that everything will be fine.

Monica Dutton is portrayed by Kelsey Asbille. Native American Monica has lived on the Broken Rock Indian Reservation all of her life. Her union with Kayce Dutton placed the couple in conflict with the Dutton family, Yellowstone Ranch, and the Broken Rock Native Americans. She worked as an instructor at Heartsong Middle School before accepting a position at Montana State University.
Early on, Monica is kept from learning of her brother's passing. After his wife commits suicide, which Monica views as a sacrifice for the sake of their children, Monica tells Kayce that she thinks they should think about leaving the reservation so that Tate won't have to experience the sadness of his cousins moving to Seattle to live with their grandparents.
Kayce, Monica, and Tate are persuaded to move to the Yellowstone Ranch by John and Jamie, who arrange for Mel Thompson of Montana State University to offer Monica a job in their expanding liberal arts department as an adjunct professor of Native American Studies while she pursues her doctorate. Monica declines, realizing that John set up the scenario.
