Drinks Without High Fructose Corn Syrup (2024)

Obesity, diabetes and heart disease are just a few of the numerous health concerns surrounding the increase in consumption of high fructose corn syrup. According to the "American Journal of Clinical Nutrition," beverages such as soft drinks and fruit juices are the main mediums through which this dangerous ingredient enters our diets. While reading ingredient labels is a critical part of avoiding high fructose corn syrup, many alternative beverage choices exist which can impart health and satisfy thirst.

Water

This may seem an obvious alternative, but surprisingly, most Americans do not drink nearly enough water. Water should supersede all other beverages and supply the majority of your hydration. Chronic dehydration is a concern among many Americans today and is linked to multiple chronic health conditions.

Herbal Teas

Herbal teas can make a great alternative to fruit juice when fruit-flavored selections are chosen and combined. Herbal teas do not have to be boring. Try chamomile to promote sleep and relaxation or ginger to energize the body. Green tea provides an array of potential health benefits including the prevention of cancer.

100 Percent Fruit Juice

While fruit juice is one of the main beverages in which high fructose corn syrup is found, many brands offer 100 percent juice varieties. Apple juice rarely contains high fructose corn syrup. Fruit juices should be consumed in moderation since they contain high concentrations of sugar. Diluting 100 percent fruit juices with water is best to decrease the natural sugars.

Kombucha Tea

Kombucha tea contains a rich supply of probiotics – healthy gut bacteria – and has been consumed for centuries to help digestion and promote a feeling of well being. A study published in 2012 in "BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine" even indicates it may be effective in the treatment and prevention of diabetes. This slightly carbonated tea has helped many eliminate their soda addiction and is easy to prepare at home.

Stevia Soda

A unique and healthful alternative to soda is to combine carbonated mineral water with several drops of flavored, liquid stevia. Stevia is a sweet herb with zero calories and no known side effects. Liquid stevia is available in root beer, vanilla, lemon and many other delicious flavors. Healthy soda is now a reality.
