Outlander may seem pretty confusing to follow for those who aren't die-hard fans. The historical drama finds its characters switching between multiple timelines, starting with Claire Randall- now Fraser - accidentally stepping into a stone circle and being transported 200 years back in time.

So here is out guide to the timeline of the hit Starz show.

1945

World War II has just ended and Claire is in Inverness with husband Frank. While in Scotland, the couple visit the ancient Druid stone circle of Craig Na Dun. The following day, Claire returns to the stones to investigate a plant for her botanical healing interests. This is when she stumbles through the stones and time-travels 200 years into the past.

1743

After arriving in 1743 Claire meets Black Jack Randall, her husband's ancestor and he attempts to capture her, however, she is then saved by a group of Scottish rebels, including hunky Highland warrior Jamie Fraser.

She uses her medical skills to help Jamie and captivates the clan with her knowledge of 20th-century medicine. Clan McKenzie takes Claire in as their own and she lives alongside the clan in Castle Leoch.

In a bid to return to 1945, Claire returns to the stones at Craig Na Dun when Jamie is off on clan business and is captured by Black Jack Randall.

Jamie rescues Claire from Randall but this is far from the end of the drama for the couple. Claire is accused of witchcraft and captured once again, but Jamie comes to the rescue once again.

Following this, Claire finally opens up to Jamie and confesses her true identity, that she is from 1945. He understands that she wants to return to her own time and returns to Craig Na Dun stones.

This time, Jamie is taken prisoner by Black Jack Randall and subsequently tortured. Claire arranges an elaborate plan to rescue her love, with the help of the other clan members. They break into the prison and free Jamie. However, he is a changed man.

1744

Claire helps Jamie get back to himself after his ordeal with Randall and announces she is pregnant.

The duo head to France, where Bonnie Prince Charlie has taken up residence. They become part of his social circle and work to convince Prince Charles and his supporters that a rebellion may not be the best idea.

Jamie and Claire take in a young Fergus. Meanwhile, their efforts to quiet the rebellion seem pointless as Charlie and his supporters remain determined to reclaim the English throne.

It's revealed to the Fraser clan that Black Jack Randall is still alive- despite their prison raid- and he is in Paris. He attacks Fergus, however, Claire begs Jamie not to kill him to ensure Frank is eventually born.

Jamie is back in prison after duelling and Claire gives birth to a stillborn daughter named Faith. She is forced to perform a strange ritual followed by King Louis's sexual demands so Jamie can be freed. Once free, the couple then returns to Scotland.

1745: The Jacobites Uprising

Jamie and Claire move into Jamie's family home, Lallybroch, in Scotland. A letter arrives informing them that Prince Charles plans to travel to Scotland and stage his takeover of the British crown.

The Battle of Culloden looms so Jamie takes Claire back to the stones at Craig Na Dun in an attempt to get her to safety. The time travelling nurse finds herself in 1948.

Frank arrives back in Scotland and they are reunited, however, she is now pregnant with another man's child. Despite this, Frank agrees to take her back and raise the baby as his own and they move to Boston.

Meanwhile, Jamie survives the Battle of Culloden, finally killing Black Jack Randall.

1900-2000

Claire and Frank are living in Boston, raising Brianna, however, their once passionate love had been ruined by her experience with Black Jack Randall, and she couldn't stop loving Jamie.

As the years go by, Brianna grows into an adult and finds out the truth about her mother's past. When Frank dies in a car accident, they travel to Scotland to find out the truth about what happened to Jamie.

Historian Roger MacKenzie helps the pair look into Jamie's story. When they discover he would still be alive and living in Edinburgh, Claire decided to travel through the stones to be reunited with the love of her life.

1766

Jamie and Claire are finally reunited and their love relights easily. Jamie, who is still married to Laoghaire, requests an annulment. His wife accepts the annulment, however, she demands money from Jamie in return.

He travels to a remote island to fetch valuable gems that were stated away after the Uprising, however, his nephew, Young Ian, who he took with him is captured by pirates and taken to Jamaica.

The couple try to rescue Young Ian by following in another ship, with the help of Lord Grey they rescue Ian and then head for Scotland, only to be shipwrecked, waking up in Georgia.

1767

Claire and Jamie make their way up the coast of America, heading to North Carolina. Along the way they encounter hints of the budding American Revolution.

They both have their hearts set on returning to Scotland, but Jamie is offered some land in the US, a hill that they eventually name Fraser's Ridge. The couple begin building their family home.

1971

Brianna grows closer to Roger in Scotland. He proposes to her, but she declines as she does not feel ready.

Brianna discovers that her parents are killed in a fire at their home on Fraser's Ridge sometime in the 1770s. She decides to travel back in time and save them, and Roger follows.

1701-1800

Jamie and Claire have been separated for 20 years. He is hiding near Lallybroch after surviving the Battle of Culloden.

Jamie is blackmailed into sleeping with Ellesmere's young fiancée Geneva and impregnates her. She dies in childbirth, and when Ellesmere tries to kill the baby, Jamie kills him instead.

Jamie's friend Lord John Grey who ran Ardsmuir Prison helps him cover up the affair and the baby is raised by Geneva's sister Isobel. Grey then marries Isobel and raises Jamie's son as his stepson.

Jamie's parole is up in 1764., he marries Laoghaire out of pity, however, he soon leaves her their life together is miserable.

1770

Brianna is reunited with Claire and Jamie and goes with them to live at Fraser's Ridge, she is pregnant with Stephen Bonnet's baby and gives birth at Riverrun. Roger promises to raise the child as his own.
