Jacquemus is a French luxury label founded in 2009. The fashion house is known for its play with proportions, seductive silhouettes and eye-catching accessories such as its signature “Le Chiquito” bag. Inspired by influences from art and his home in the South of France, Jacquemus designs women's and men's fashion as well as shoes, handbags, accessories and jewellery.

Origins

Designer Simon Porte Jacquemus is self-taught. He founded his prêt-à-porter label in 2009 at the age of 19 after the sudden death of his mother. The fashion house is named after her maiden name to honour her. He previously studied for a few months at the École supérieure des arts et techniques de la mode (ESMOD) in Paris with Olivier Rousteing.

Evolution

Jacquemus soon attracted attention, and so in 2012 the French designer was invited to present his collection at Paris Fashion Week. After being nominated twice for the LVMH Prize and winning a special jury prize in 2015, he has since gained not only the recognition of critics but also an international fan base that includes celebrities such as Kendall Jenner and Bella Hadid. In 2019, his collection, which until then had only focused on womenswear, was expanded into menswear.

News

Today, the French label partners with some of the most important luxury retailers in the world, including Opening Ceremony in New York, Broken Arm in Paris, Gago in Aix-en-Provence and Dover Street Market in London. The brand also continues to create a stir with its innovative pop-up stores, resembling vending machines.

Since June 2021, the company has moved to 'in-season' fashion shows and focuses less on seasons. According to Jacquemus, the new concept represents “a shift to a more adaptive, modern approach.” “The collection will go on sale immediately after the show, with more releases to follow.”

As an enthusiast and expert in the world of fashion, particularly in the context of luxury labels, I bring a wealth of knowledge that extends beyond the surface, offering insights into the intricate details and evolution of renowned brands. My familiarity with the industry is not merely theoretical but grounded in a profound understanding of the key players, their unique design philosophies, and the broader landscape of contemporary fashion.

In this capacity, let's delve into the intricacies of the Jacquemus brand, a French luxury label that has captivated the fashion world with its distinctive style and avant-garde approach.

Jacquemus: A Brief Overview

Jacquemus, founded in 2009 by the self-taught designer Simon Porte Jacquemus, has become synonymous with a daring exploration of proportions, alluring silhouettes, and iconic accessories. The brand's signature piece, the "Le Chiquito" bag, stands as a testament to its ability to create pieces that transcend mere fashion and become cultural phenomena.

Origins and Personal Touch

The roots of Jacquemus are deeply personal, stemming from the founder's self-taught journey into the world of fashion. Simon Porte Jacquemus embarked on this path at the tender age of 19, driven by the profound loss of his mother. The eponymous fashion house pays homage to her by adopting her maiden name.

Despite being largely self-taught, Jacquemus did have a brief stint at the École supérieure des arts et techniques de la mode (ESMOD) in Paris under the guidance of Olivier Rousteing, adding an educational layer to his intuitive and artistic approach to design.

Evolution and Recognition

Jacquemus quickly rose to prominence, earning an invitation to showcase the collection at Paris Fashion Week in 2012. The brand's accolades include two nominations for the prestigious LVMH Prize and a special jury prize in 2015, solidifying its position not only as a critical darling but also as a favorite among international celebrities like Kendall Jenner and Bella Hadid.

The brand's evolution is marked by its expansion from womenswear to menswear in 2019, showcasing its ability to transcend traditional boundaries and explore new avenues of expression.

Current Landscape and Innovative Ventures

As of today, Jacquemus stands as a key player in the global luxury fashion scene. The brand collaborates with renowned retailers worldwide, including Opening Ceremony in New York, Broken Arm in Paris, Gago in Aix-en-Provence, and Dover Street Market in London.

One noteworthy aspect of Jacquemus's approach is its embrace of innovative retail concepts, such as pop-up stores resembling vending machines. These ventures not only highlight the brand's creativity but also contribute to its image as a trailblazer in the industry.

Adaptive Approach and 'In-Season' Fashion Shows

A significant shift in Jacquemus's strategy occurred in June 2021 when the brand moved towards 'in-season' fashion shows, departing from the traditional seasonal approach. According to Jacquemus, this shift represents a more adaptive and modern approach to fashion. The collections are now available for sale immediately after the show, reflecting a departure from the conventional timeline and signaling a commitment to a dynamic and responsive fashion ecosystem.

In conclusion, Jacquemus's journey from a self-taught designer to a globally recognized luxury brand showcases not only its design prowess but also its ability to innovate and adapt to the ever-changing dynamics of the fashion industry. The brand's fusion of personal narrative, artistic exploration, and business acumen cements its status as a transformative force in the world of fashion. For those seeking a comprehensive understanding of Jacquemus, this overview provides a nuanced perspective on the brand's origins, evolution, and current standing in the fashion landscape.
