Why do people go through fads? ›

Fads can be driven by a variety of factors, including social influence, marketing, and novelty. People often adopt fads because they want to fit in with their peers or be seen as trendy and fashionable.

A fad is short-lived, typically lasting less than a year. Fads tend to start up suddenly and are typically limited to one industry (such as clothing) or one demographic (such as tween girls). A trend, on the other hand, starts slowly, grows slowly, and has more staying power than a fad.

TikTok has proven itself to not be a social media fad when considering the years it has been up for business. Since 2016, this app has been operational, and annually, the user statistics have grown. The platform has even permeated to people of strong cultural backgrounds using the app to share and engage with videos.

A fad, trend, or craze is any form of collective behavior that develops within a culture, a generation or social group in which a group of people enthusiastically follow an impulse for a short time period. Fads are objects or behaviors that achieve short-lived popularity but fade away.

You use fad to refer to an activity or topic of interest that is very popular for a short time, but which people become bored with very quickly.

Often used interchangeably, the two categories are actually very different. For example, a trend begins slow, takes time to gain momentum and has greater staying power. Fads on the other hand, rise quickly in popularity and fall just as fast. The difference between a trend and a fad is their power of endurance.

A fad, also known as a craze, refers to a fashion that becomes popular in a culture (or subcultures) relatively quickly, remains popular, often for a rather brief period, then loses popularity dramatically, as it either fades into obscurity, or becomes a regular part of a society's culture.

FADs are legally considered fishing devices, so releasing them into MPAs is illegal, as is their abandonment under MARPOL.
