I do not - I repeat do not - wear tights - ever.
I wear a black dress to summer funerals and black trousers to winter funerals.
With the black dress I am bare-legged with smart black shoes.
It has never occurred to me to wear tights in warm weather. Why would anyone?
Hope I haven't been making a terrible social faux pas all these years.

I went to a funeral last week and didn't wear tights. My dress came to below my knees and I do have quite brown legs/toned calves. I didn't feel inappropriately dressed at all.

Agree with everyone else. If you're wearing an appropriate, below knee dress, etc no need for tights at all.

I didn't wear tights at my Grandfather's funeral the other week - it was warm!

Mmmm, I'm sorry but, I don't think it is appropriate.
Sorry!
I am quite old-fashioned about etiquette,though!
valiumredhead · 08/05/2011 15:49
Good grief, what's not appropriate Zondra?
People hardly even wear black these days let alone tut at people not wearing tights.

I feel unfinished if I don't wear tights and in warm weather I wear stockings. If buying tights I buy the next size up and find them to be much more comfortable. It also pays to get better quality tights. I stick to wolfords when not pregnant and get them from the outlet store where they are half price or less. They last far longer than normal tights (3 years so far) and I machine wash them in a delicates bag.

Valiumredhead- I'm not tutting, merely answering your query.
To me, personally it's more a fashion statement & I think it just looks more groomed & finished for a funeral.
No offence meant.
Just my opinion! Like I said, I'm probably a bit old-fashioned about certain things!
I don't always wear tights, either, it's just that when I'm bare-legged I'm in casual, summery mode.
I usually do wear black to funerals but, I did wear a really vibrant, cerise, cashmere cardi that my lovely gran gave me, to her funeral.
I'm not as po-faced as you think... ;)

Btw- OP, sorry for your loss. Hope the day goes smoothly.
BranchingOut · 08/05/2011 16:17
I think that some kind of hosiery would be most appropriate, unless it is the 'hottest day of the year' kind of weather....
Or, if you have truly excellent skin on your legs or a darker skin tone.
I went to a funeral one July and didn't wear tights, but then I wore a flowing, ankle length skirt.
CointreauVersial · 08/05/2011 16:20
As long as you are dressed respectfully (i.e. no skimpy skirt, no cleavage, shoulders covered etc) then no problem.
I went to a funeral last week without tights.
Meglet · 08/05/2011 16:24
I always wear trousers to funerals. My family have never had a 'black' funeral either.
cabbageroses · 08/05/2011 16:34
I don;t think it's whether it is a funeral that is the point- it's what kind of dress you will wear and what your legs are like!
I wore tights last August to a garden party, with a summer dress, as it was freezing cold! They were very fine denier and nude.
I hope that at my funeral people will wear what the hell they like. The dead can't see and if they could- would they care? no.

Zondra - sorry, I'm a bit prickly, have had 2 funerals in the last 2 months and my nerves are shredded.
Zondra · 08/05/2011 16:48
Valiumredhead- No probs! Hope you start to feel better soon. It's so hard dealing with grief. It just takes time. Again, just would like to stress that I really did not mean to offend you or anyone else.
valiumredhead · 08/05/2011 16:51
Thanks Zondra :)
OP sorry for your loss.

Depends whose funeral it is as well, I think.
LynneJones · 24/02/2017 08:51
I think its good to wear black tights if your skirt / dress is knee length or just below, as obviously you will be showing a fair bit of leg. However you could wear trousers or as has been said if the skirt / dress is long then i dont think any one will mind. The fact that youve probably worn an appropriate dark outfit anyway shows that you are making the effort and showing the due respect. And thats all anyone will expect
