Get Ready for 'Thor: Love and Thunder' (2024)

What do you need to know before the new Thor film arrives in theaters? Here's a little history and some recommended reading!

We’re just a few days away from the fourth installment of the Thor films, “Loveand Thunder,” arriving in theaters on July 8. If you’ve never seen a Thor moviebefore, there are a few things you need to know before sitting down with yourpopcorn.

First, watch a few Marvel movies to get up to speed. There are nearly two dozenfilms, but you can skip several and knock this out if you just watch (in this order): “Thor,” “The Avengers,” “Thor: DarkWorld,” “The Avengers: Age of Ultron,” “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1,” “Thor:Ragnarok,” “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” “The Avengers: Infinity War” and“The Avengers: Endgame.”

Now, go stretch those legs and take a walk to the comic book shop. Thor hasexisted since the 1960s in comics and there are decades of comic book stories todig through if you want to fully understand what’s happening, or where it allmight lead in the future.

What if? #10

The first appearance of Jane Foster as Thor in an out-of-continuity, imaginarystory. Jane becomes Thor in “Love and Thunder,” played by Natalie Portman.

Journey into Mystery Annual #1

The first appearance of Zeus, who appears in “Love and Thunder” played byRussell Crowe. Hercules also first appeared in this issue, and it remains to beseen whether or not he joins the MCU in this film.

Thor #378

The first appearance of new Thor armor that looks similar to his new armor in“Love and Thunder.”

Thor Annual #5

The first appearance of giant goats Toothgnasher and Toothgrinder, who appearpulling Thor’s chariot in “Love and Thunder.”

Thor #2

The first full appearance of Jane Foster as Thor in continuity. She appeared incameo three times before this appearance, including the previous issue, Thor #1.

Thor #4

The first meeting of Thor Odinson and Jane as Thor, although it's not revealedto be Jane until Thor #8.

Thor #12

Jane Foster reveals she has cancer, which is rumored to also be a part of thestory in “Love and Thunder.”

Spawn #9

The first appearance of Angela in Image Comics. The character was later acquiredby Marvel and is rumored to appear in “Love and Thunder.” She first appeared inMarvel Comics in Age of Ultron #10 (cameo) and Guardians of the Galaxy #5 (fullappearance).

Thor: God of Thunder #2

The first appearance of Gorr the God Butcher, played in “Love and Thunder” byChristian Bale.
