Guide to Wearing Stud Sets - Cufflinks Blog (2024)

A shirt stud is a stylish fastener that fits into the buttonholes of a pleated dress shirt. They are worn at all formal occasions and many semi-formal occasions in accordance with the event's dress code. If you are someone who often attends formal events, you will want to make sure you know the ins and outs of stud sets.

How do I Choose the right Stud Set?

When selecting a stud set, always consider the color of your tuxedo or suit jacket, then pick something that will be flattering and bring out its colors. A simple way to do this is to hang the jacket in good lighting where you can see it and then take turns holding different stud sets up to it. When you look at the colors of the sets, which one is the most flattering to you? Does the gold metal bring out the navy blue of the jacket and make it look even richer? Does the brilliant shine of silver stand out against the black, making it look sharp and classic? In the past, there has been strict rules about matching colors, but in today's modern world, don't think about what rules to follow. Ask yourself what feels best to you. Fashion is all about self expression, creativity, and taking risks, so pick your stud set in accordance with your own personal style.

How to put on Studs?

Wearing studs can be tricky at first, but once you get the hang of it, you'll find they are no trouble at all. In order to master studs, there are two key steps.

Step 1

Find the stud hole that is next to each pearl button on the front of your shirt. Now, starting from the inside of the shirt, insert the front (the decorative side) of the stud through the hole. If your shirt comes with pearl buttons, simply ignore them as they are not needed when you have a pair of studs to act as the fasteners.

Step 2

Next feed the stud (which is your button now) through the front button hole on the shirt. Repeat this step for the remaining button holes and you're done. It is that easy.

When should I wear stud sets?

When you buy a stud set they will arrive in a set of four with matching cufflinks. You don't always have to wear the compete set. If you choose a Windsor tie and vest for example, you can easily leave the studs at home as they will not be visible under the large tie. However, if you are wearing a bow tie, you should always have the studs and cufflinks on display to complete your look (see below).

Also, keep in mind that studs and cufflinks should always be worn at formal events and are being used more and more at semi-formal events or even causal ones. If you are still unsure about whether cufflinks are necessary, a good rule to follow is to check and see if you will be wearing a long sleeve shirt with button holes. If the answer is yes, then cufflinks are a go. Many trend-setters have even been tailoring their vintage flannels to allow for cufflinks to be added!
