What Does LVMH Stand For?

LVMH – Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton –is a French-holding multinational corporation and conglomerate specializing in luxury goods. It was founded in 1987 as a result of the merger between Moët Hennessy (which was established following the 1971 merger between the champagne producer Moët & Chandon, founded in 1743, and the cognac producer Hennessy, founded in 1765) and the fashion house Louis Vuitton, founded in 1854. Today, the Group comprises more than 75 Maisons across 5 sectors: Fashion & Leather Goods, Perfumes & Cosmetics, Watches & Jewelry, Selective Retailing, and Wines & Spirits. Once you have found the job that interests you, it’s time to do some pre-application work before applying to make sure that you’ll get a response, land a job interview, and eventually get the job.

LVMH Hiring Process

Although the hiring process will depend on the specific brand you are applying to work for, you can expect it to last more or less long and be conducted in several stages. Indeed, the jobs at luxury brands are very competitive, and they tend to have more requirements, so you shouldn’t be surprised if the candidate selection process goes beyond the traditional hiring process when you send your application, the company calls you for an interview, and that’s it. So, what can you expect?

Let’s see how you have to prepare to get a job at LVMH.

I’ve spoken to different recruiters and people working there and what the LVMH group values in applications is YOU. They want to hire talents, they believe people can make a difference. So even before covering how to write your CV to get a job at LVMH, the first work you should do is on yourself.

Do this pre-application work/exercise: first thing first, know yourself.

You’ll have to tell your story both in your CV and application and later during the job interview. So the first step for you is to sit back and reflect on what makes you unique. Don’t skip this step to go straight to writing your CV, trust me that this exercise is crucial to get a job at LVMH. Recruiters will ask you about your story, so it’s better to be prepared so you’ll know exactly how to answer that. In order to be the best version of yourself at work, you need to know yourself.

Prepare your story by answering these questions: What makes you unique? What educational and professional experiences did you have? What’s your attitude? (Attitude is how you react in certain situations and circ*mstances) How do you face challenges? What are your values? What’s your personality? What are your aspirations? What are your ambitions? And then last but not least, what are your skills – both hard and soft skills that you can bring to the table? How do you improve your skills?

It helps to write everything down so you can have a deeper understanding of who you are and what you want and use this information when you need it or if the company asks you.

After a deep study of yourself, it’s time to study the company.

The second step to getting a job at LVMH is to study the group and the Maison.

Whether it’s LVMH or any other company, before applying for a job it’s essential that you study the brands. Fashion companies want to know that you are specifically applying for that particular job and not putting down an application just to get one job. LVMH wants to know that you really care about the group, the specific Maison (Dior, Fendi…), and their values.

The best way to understand the values and culture at LVMH is to visit their website (read pages such as “about us”, “company values”..), go into the store of the brand if you can, and talk to the people there (ask questions about the brand, the values…) watch the fashion shows… you need to have a strong understanding of the brand and LVMH group so you’ll be ready to answer any question they will ask you during the job interview, or even before that: with the information you have, you can tailor your application to the brand.

The information you have collected so far about yourself and the brand will be used to compile your resume efficiently. This is the third step.

So how do you write a CV to get a job at LVMH?

I’ve already talked a lot about your resume/CV before on Glam Observer, and the same rules apply to LVMH as to any other company. Let’s see the key components.

Step 1

Tailor your CV to each job offer. The idea isn’t to have just one CV, but a CV to match each job you’re applying for. You don’t have to change your template and overall structure, but rather play with the keywords inside your previous experiences and skills. Change the order, add, replace, and remove them according to the job and company.

Step 2

Make sure your resume fits into 1 single page. Your ability to summarize everything in 1 page is something employers really look out for, especially if you have years of experience and it’s challenging to fit everything on one page. And if you don’t have many years of experience at your back – it makes even more sense to have just 1 page.

Step 3

If you want to get a job at LVMH, something that should always be on your CV is the languages section. LVMH is an international group with its headquarters in France, so you should at least be fluent in French and English. When writing your language proficiency in your resume, don’t use a star system. Instead, concentrate on any diplomas you may have – for instance, the TOEIC or the TOEFL. Or you can indicate your level by using terms such as basic, proficient, fluent, native speaker, or bilingual.

Step 4

Include the title of the position you’re applying for (Fashion Stylist, Buyer, Merchandiser…) followed by a short introduction about yourself.

Step 5

Make sure the email address you add to your resume and use for the application is professional. Don’t use an old email ([emailprotected]) or your university one. If you don’t have a professional email, create one. It can look as simple as this: [emailprotected]

Step 6

Make sure there are no spelling or grammar mistakes. Check thoroughly before you hit send. You can check it out after some hours with a fresh look, or the day after if you have time. You can even ask a friend, sister, or mom to proofread it.

Step 7

Add a professional photo. Take one specific for your resume; don’t use one of your trips or parties.

For more creative jobs such as fashion designer, or graphic design, a portfolio can give a better understanding of your skills and competencies, plus you could even get the job despite your lack of experience or skills on your CV if your portfolio is so strong that it can prove you can do the job anyway.

How to prepare for a job interview at LVMH

Ah, the scary process of a job interview. Don’t worry, we got you covered.

Companies often conduct assessments during the interview or even before to select the right candidates more easily. Depending on the job, you could be tested on a specific technical skill needed for the role, or your knowledge of a foreign language if the company is based in another country, and/or your responsibilities will involve traveling abroad or working with international stakeholders. Hence you should always read carefully the job responsibilities and requirements in the job description, so you will know that you could be potentially submitted to a test on one (or several) of those requirements during your interview or even before.

For example, if you are applying for a job in social media, you could be asked to create some posts for the brand’s social media account. If you are applying for a marketing job, recruiters could ask you to brainstorm some marketing strategies or prepare a campaign draft. You got it: there are as many possible assessments as there are job duties.

Speaking about one particular skill, have you noticed while looking for jobs and internships that 90% of them require Excel?

If not, try to do some research online and read some job descriptions of different jobs and internships in fashion, and you’ll find out that most of them require knowledge of the MS office package and in particular, Excel. So chances are high that the hiring team will make you pass an Excel test. I tell this from my personal experience, as 10 years ago, I broke into the fashion industry with an eCommerce internship at Alexander McQueen thanks to this program. During my second interview, recruiters put me in front of a laptop with an Excel sheet open in front of me with a database of sales and they asked me to calculate the sell-through and do some other formulas. So take my advice, and learn Excel.

Sometimes fashion companies will mention the hiring process details in the job description and how long it will last more or less, so make sure to read that information. If it’s not mentioned, why not get in touch with the hiring manager (whose name is mentioned in the job description when you apply on Linkedin, by the way) or the HR department to find out? Be proactive, and gather all the information that may help you to know what to expect and get mentally prepared for the different recruitment stages.

Whether it’s in person, on Zoom, or via phone, the important thing is to stay true to yourself.

Don’t try to be someone else that you might think the company would appreciate. Be humble, and prepare your elevator pitch to answer the first and the famous question: “Tell us about yourself”. Imagine the answer to this question as a movie trailer: you need to be short and talk about your education and professional choice, your learning journey, and what you are bringing to the table now. Bring your positive attitude and enthusiasm for the brand and the position.

Refresh your information about the brand and the group that you studied in the first place when you were doing the pre-application work.
